Abstract:
Analyzes the attitudes of Hungarian intellectuals toward the persecution of the Jews before and during the Second World War. Refers to the analysis by István Bibó, who wrote about the responsibility of intellectuals for the persecutions. Discusses fiction and non-fiction works of important writers such as Gyula Szekfű, Dezső Szabó, Péter Veres, and others, who supported Hungarian nationalism and antisemitism, and the opinions of intellectuals concerning the consecutive anti-Jewish laws between 1938-44. Asserts that the most important intellectuals did not oppose these measures up to the outbreak of the war, after which some of them did not express an opinion at all, but some, especially historians, continued to spread nationalistic ideas. Concludes that, after the war, Hungarian intellectuals never publicly discussed their attitudes toward the past, antisemitism, and the Holocaust.
