Abstract: Among the property seized during the expulsion of the Jews decided by Philip the Fair in 1306, the documents of the Treasury of the Charters mention buildings qualified as scola. This term, translated either as “school” or as “synagogue”, has provoked a lively debate about the building discovered in 1976 in the courtyard of the Palace of Justice in Rouen. The underlying question concerns the existence of specific places to transmit the knowledge and texts of Jewish tradition in the Middle Ages. To answer this question, we propose to re-examine the use of the term scola in Latin sources and of the Hebrew word yeshivah, which seems to translate scola. Finally, we will examine the organization of teaching in the Jewish world in France and Italy.

Abstract: In the personal credo that prefaces his Decem libri historiarum, Gregory of Tours states his belief in an Antichrist who would impose circumcision upon his subjects. While Gregory did not invent this theme of a circumcising Antichrist, it nevertheless closely mirrored his own eschatological anxieties. Physical circumcision was, for Gregory, an unmistakable indicator of Judaism and the Old Law. The Bishop of Tours was deeply concerned about the Jews of his own time, whose obstinate refusal to acknowledge Christian truth he perceived as an obstacle to his socio-religious ideal of a unified Christian society. While Gregory did not necessarily believe that the End Times would arrive during his own lifetime, he saw signa of its inevitability everywhere, and consequently encouraged readiness on the part of his contemporaries. The Antichrist’s imposition of compulsory circumcision thus implied for Gregory the culmination of an ongoing effort by Jews to inhibit Christian unity.

Abstract: Not 3,000, but 300,000 visas were required to comply with all requests for emigration, Angelo Dell’Acqua, a member of the Roman Curia, said summarizing the so-called Brazilian Visa Project in 1940. Many people persecuted as Jews sought refuge in South America; thousands of them asked the pope and the Roman Curia for help with their emigration. The Brazilian government granted 3,000 visas on a singular basis. The new sources made accessible by the opening of the archival holdings pertaining to the pontificate of Pius XII allow us to reconstruct these cases in a detailed manner. Based on thousands of petitions written by Jewish people (which shall be published in a critical online edition at http://www.askingthepopeforhelp.de) as well as internal regulations, here analyzed for the first time, the inner-curial decision-making process is documented as a hermeneutic process reconstructing the fate of individuals, on the one hand, and providing answers to overarching questions on the other. The influence of antisemitic stereotypes about Jews and the behavior of the pope and the Curia during the Shoah are discussed. The focus of this article is on Catholics of Jewish origin, and on the question of their belonging to the Church, a subject that has been entirely underrepresented in research until today.

Abstract: Mother Earth is home to an unprecedented number of translations of the Bible, making it the most widely translated book in the world. The pages of this book have traversed a variety of physical and metaphorical borders, navigating diverse geographical, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, and religious intersections. Across space, time, and cultures, millions of readers have found various reasons to read it through diverse lenses. The Bible was frequently translated and brought to the colonized territories with colonial movements. Regrettably, it was often utilized as a tool for subjugation and dominance. However, the colonized people also used this resource for their own goals. Do contemporary biblical studies have the courage to look upon the tomes and tons of translated Bibles lying upon the surface of Mother Earth? What responsibilities and opportunities does the Global Translated Bible(s) lay upon academic biblical studies? What research questions, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration does it open? What are the pedagogical obligations and implications of acknowledging the Global Translated Bible(s)? In other words, what does faithfulness and unfaithfulness to the translated biblical corpus entail, imply, and demand? This lecture proposes and emphasizes the imperative of mainstreaming the Global Translated Bible(s) into academic biblical studies.

Abstract: This paper examines the depiction of Jewish and Christian merchants in the medieval English Host miracle play, the Croxton Play of the Sacrament. This play is a critical illustration of religious racialization, effectively demonstrating the perpetuation of anti-Jewish stereotypes and legitimizing violence. Positioned within a broader scholarly debate, particularly in relation to Augustine’s doctrine of Jewish witness, the play portrays Jews as allegorical figures that validate Christian theological constructs. This paper delves into the representation and linguistic depiction of Jewish characters in the play, emphasizing their systematic dehumanization and instrumentalization in Christian narratives. A significant focus is placed on the coerced conversion of Jewish characters, which forces them into the archetype of the “Wandering Jew”, thereby highlighting motifs of symbolic aggression and unending diaspora. This paper also confronts contemporary scholarly perspectives that view the play as challenging religious boundaries, positing that such interpretations overlook the ingrained racialization and marginalization of Jewish identity during the European Middle Ages. It argues that the play’s transient disruption of power dynamics ultimately reinforces prevailing social hierarchies, thereby solidifying deep-seated anti-Jewish sentiments.

Abstract: This article reviews a major issue in Lukan research: the political function of the church's relationship to Israel in the construction of social identity. The so-called »ancestral theme« (e. g., P.F. Esler; G. Sterling) is today widely accepted in Lukan studies. After a presentation of the current state of research, recently marked by critical voices, three aspects are reconsidered and examined: Luke's depiction of God, the Pauline portrait in Acts, and the Areopagus speech (Acts 17:16–34). These three elements lend credibility to Luke's political use of the cultural motif of ancientness.

Abstract: In Christian tradition, Paul is the apostle to the nations. However, his portrayal in the Book of Acts is more nuanced. For a longer period, Paul's ministry is limited to Jews. Only from Acts 13 onwards does Paul slowly emerge as ministering to non-Jews. Yet even then, Paul remains foremost an emissary to diaspora Judaism. In its apology for Paul and his disputed way of including non-Jews into the people of God, Acts emphasises that Paul did so without diminishing the priority of Israel, as a staunch proponent of Jewish monotheism and in a way that took full account of the precarious situation of diaspora Judaism.

Abstract: This article surveys the development of the public artificial wading pools that have been established in Judea and Samaria since 2007 and examines physical, social, and symbolic aspects that this contemplation brings to light. The pools were built through local initiatives in response to the lack of natural springs in the environs of the settlements in which they are located. They also serve to address the complex geopolitical and security reality that excludes Jewish inhabitants from natural water sources located near areas inhabited by the Palestinian population. Since their establishment, the pools have served as a magnet for many local visitors, hikers, and tourists. Observing those visiting the pools reveals a prominent presence of women and children enjoying the sense of security around them; examining their usage is reflective of a creative and practical solution to the issue of the multi-gender bathing of the national-religious population; and contemplating the actions of the local authorities indicates that these pools serve them as a preferred means of disseminating public information and diplomacy. In addition, their symbolic meanings sharpen the insight that their design was meant to imbue them with a “biblical,” pastoral appearance, as part of the spatial conception of second generation Jewish settlers in Judea and Samaria. These trends preserve the landscape memory that was ingrained in members of the first generation in a new form and hold explicit and implicit political and ideological meanings.

Abstract: This article examines the broader context for Polish Jews' de-assimilation since the fall of communism, analyzes the complex process of individual discovery and communal recovery of Jewish identity, and discusses the multiple challenges de-assimilated Jews face in constructing a new Jewish identity. The study is based on fieldwork conducted between 2010 and 2019, and includes participant observation in Jewish organizations in Poland and during a Birthright trip to Israel with a group of young Polish Jews; interviews with Jewish communal leaders and Poles recovering a Jewish identity; and archival research documenting the institutional rebirth of Jewish life in Poland.

Abstract: This chapter introduces the theme of the volume and the contributions it seeks to make to the study of ancient travel. Such contributions are twofold. First, this volume is the first to include early Islamic travel within the comparative study of travel in antiquity. Second, our focus on experiential aspects of ancient journeying break new ground in demonstrating the variety of experiences travelling may evoke and in leading the way in the application of new methods in the study of ancient travel. This introduction ends with suggestions for future research, for which the articles collected here set the stage.

Abstract: The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries witnessed an impressive rise in the invention of new religious rituals in Jewish tradition, and charging traditional rituals with new meaning. It extended to all aspects of Jewish life, those regulated by Halakhah and even neutral domains from the Halakhic perspective, such as sleep, clothes, or good manners. Behind this ‘Ritual Turn’ stood the rise of early modern Kabbalah and the unprecedented shift from esoteric patterns to publicity and disseminating the Jewish mystical lore. These changes took place mostly in Jewish communities under the Ottoman Empire, and their main instigators were mystics of Sephardi origins. It added one front to the Jewish-Iberian cultural and political dominance over other Jewish local traditions. The ritual changes provide a trustworthy indication to important changes in Jewish religiosity, and the deep interaction between Jewish and non-Jewish religious changes in the early modern period, especially in the Ottoman context.

Abstract: Body image is studied in the context of culture and religion and it is explored in relationship to Jewish ritual and practice. Several similar studies have demonstrated this association for Jewish women, and also for other religions and cultures around the world. However, the scientific evidence pertaining to the possible mechanisms associated with such links is less clear. Still, when examining the possible effect of Jewish rituals and practices that help people to cope with body image concerns, faith and media exposure were found to have a potential mediating effect. With regard to modesty, although a highly relevant construct when studying both Jewish rituals and practices and body image, no evidence was found for such an association, though more research is clearly needed. These findings highlight the potential protective factor religion may play in the creation of body image satisfaction among Jewish women. Limitations of current research as well as implications and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract: In the complex “parting of the ways” between the early Jesus movement and its Jewish roots, Christianity both preserved and abandoned Jewish rituals. The multi-faceted nature of such reception appears throughout early Christian literature, but this study particularly focuses upon the Book of Acts and the Apostolic Fathers. The essay examines the early Christian reception of prayer, temple worship, Sabbath observance, liturgy and Scripture reading, ritual washing, casting of lots, almsgiving and charity, burial, laying on of hands, kashrut, fasting, shaking off of dust, circumcision, vows, and head shaving. These specific investigations within Acts and the Apostolic Fathers amply reflect both the adoption of existing Jewish rituals and the adaptation and even rejection of previous Jewish traditions.

Abstract: The intersections of Jewish and Christian ritual practice begin with shared roots in Second Temple Judaism and continue to today. However, their different theologies and sacred narratives and tendencies to define themselves in opposition to one another resulted in practices with minimal overlap. Nevertheless, as a minority community, Jews in Christian lands were greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Christian practices, and especially in recent centuries, deliberately imitated them. Israeli culture, though, has caused a resurgence of specifically Jewish expressions, and created a country where Jews are the majority culture. The radical post-Holocaust changes to Christian thinking about Jews have also led some Christians deliberately to imitate and integrate Jewish ritual practices.

It is based on a census of 2,679 existing manuscripts (of which 554 were consulted). The expression “complete Bibles” refers to Bibles in one volume or in several volumes from the same editorial project; however, some biblical books - and especially the Psalter, the Gospels, Baruch and the 3rd Book of Ezra - are not always present. The article therefore focuses on the configuration in one or more volumes and the “completeness” of these Bibles over time, their correlation with the geographical origin and the first known owners, as well as their size. During the eleventh and twelfth centuries the majority of Bibles are giant manuscripts, often in two or three volumes. It is only from the thirteenth century that one-volume Bibles became the norm, and they contain the entire biblical text with a fixed order of the books. Finally, the contribution highlights the process of compressing the biblical text that enabled the size of the manuscripts to be reduced until the appearance of portable Bibles during the first half of the thirteenth century. In this context, a little group of smaller and more handy manuscripts of the twelfth century (7 specimens) has been identified. It testifies the transformation of the uses of the Bible at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when complete Bibles moved from a mainly collective use to a mainly personal use.

Abstract: This essay looks at the form of the early Torah scroll as found in the Cairo Genizah Collection by re-examining the scroll originally described by Colette Sirat, Michele Dukan and Ada Yardeni in the late 1980s as potentially the earliest to be found there. This scroll, composed of two fragments from the book of Genesis, T-S NS 3.21 and T-S NS 4.3 from Cambridge University Library, has been dated between the fifth and eighth centuries CE. Whether it had originally only held Genesis, or once had been a complete scroll of the Pentateuch, was unclear, but interest was generated by a number of what were assumed to be early and non-standard features in it, in particular a non-masoretic section division before Gen 17,1. The current essay presents a substantial new piece from the same scroll, this time from the book of Exodus, which was recently discovered in the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York (ENA 4107.20). The essay looks at the new text, which covers chapters 5 to 7 of Exodus and includes several textual variants. In particular, it re-examines the question of the non-masoretic section division in the light of numerous section divisions preserved in the new fragment, and concludes that this early scroll is in fact wholly consistent with later masoretic practice.

Abstract: In 1947 Harry Austryn Wolfson published his massive and revisionary Philo: Foundations of Religious Philosophy in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With the book, Wolfson aimed at proving that Philo was an innovative and highly influential philosopher—by no means an isolated Jew of no consequence to the history of philosophy. As becomes clear from numerous letters written to Wolfson on the occasion of the publication of the book and stored at the Harvard University Archives, for Jewish readers Wolfson’s proposed rehabilitation of Philo could provide a point of orientation. It served as a source of comfort and of pride in the post-war years. While the main thesis of Wolfson’s book, Philo as the precursor of medieval philosophy, was rejected by most scholars of Philo and ancient philosophy, the letters and notes discussed in this article show that much more was at stake than a purely academic discussion.

Abstract: Building off recent work investigating the development of modern biblical criticism, this essay argues that the broadly conservative scholar Moses Stuart (1780–1852) should be seen as playing a key but unintentional role in the secularization of biblical studies in nineteenth-century America. Stuart played this role in several ways. Hermeneutically, he imbibed and popularized naturalistic assumptions summed up in the maxim that the Bible should be interpreted like any other book. Educationally, when arguing for the curricular importance of Hebrew studies, he justified the Bible’s importance not via its role as Scripture, but primarily via its place as excellent classical literature. Stuart’s example thereby suggests that, in studying the demise of Scripture’s sacred status in the modern era, scholars must pay attention not only to the attacks of the Bible’s liberal critics but also to the methods and assumptions of its conservative defenders.

Abstract: The Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls have attracted increasing scholarly attention since their official publication was completed in 2009. These manuscripts, representing about thirty distinct compositions, attest to the existence of a previously unknown Jewish Aramaic scribal culture that flourished in the early Hellenistic period (ca. late fourth to mid-second centuries BCE). The Aramaic Scrolls thus have the potential to illuminate an otherwise poorly understood period of Jewish history. In this article, I discuss the various scholarly approaches to their language, literary content, and social location, with a special emphasis on trends in the secondary literature since the late 2000s. This article will also provide interested students and scholars with an overview of the major themes and concerns found throughout the Aramaic Scrolls.

Abstract: This article proceeds on the principle that we need to decenter dominant ethnic groups—primarily Greeks and Greco-Macedonians in the early Hellenistic era—in order to understand other marginalized viewpoints and experiences, including but not limited to those of Judeans (Jews). An analysis of the Babylonian author Bel-re’ushu helps to provide a new angle on Judean (e.g., Artapanus) and Egyptian (e.g., Manetho) participation within ethnic discourses that include claims to civilizational priority. I would suggest that the rhetoric of ethnic superiority in writings by subject peoples can be viewed as a symptom of ethnic interactions and not merely as a literary response to elite Greek claims regarding the inferiority of supposedly “barbarian” peoples. So it is not always the currently hegemonic Greeks that are the principal interlocutors in these ethnic discourses.

Abstract: This article re-examines Jewish population in what is now Israel using historical estimates from Ottoman, Mandatory British and United Nations sources and recent data from the Israeli census bureau. A logistic model generates backward extrapolations and forward projections. The model quantifies three waves of Jewish immigration totalling about 3.5 million. Subtracting immigrant data from total population numbers gives the main empirical trajectory for non-immigrant native-born population. A multi-logistic model combining migrant and native populations projects a Jewish population of about 10 million in 2050, a level low in the range of estimates made by others.

Abstract: Several recent studies on Justin’s Dialogue with Trypho the Jew have argued that the Dialogue should not be read as a witness to the state of theological debate between Jews and Christ-followers in the second century. Such arguments conclude that Justin does not engage with actual Jewish perspectives, but rather reconstructs a hypothetical Judaism from second-hand, polemical sources, or merely uses Trypho’s “Judaism” as a stand-in for what are actually (in Justin’s view) heterodox Christian interpretations. This article challenges this claim by returning to an older debate in Justin scholarship: the question of his relationship with Philo of Alexandria. By attending particularly to the role of the Logos in each author’s exegesis of Pentateuchal theophanic texts, the article argues that Justin’s interpretations in the Dialogue carefully avoid a kind of Logos theology that is well represented in the writings of Philo. This rhetorical distancing supports the conclusion that, in the Dialogue, Justin is in fact responding to exegetical traditions which he knows from the writings of Hellenized Judaism.
