Abstract:
Criticizes the two traditional views on the Conversos: one, that most of them were not sincere converts and continued to bring up their children in the Jewish faith, so that the Spanish Inquisition was established to eradicate this secret Judaism; the other, that all but a small minority had integrated into Christian society by the time the Inquisition was established. Argues that both the Converso problem and the Inquisition developed over time and that their study requires a change of methodology and a widening of the field of research.
