Abstract:
In 1796, more than two hundred Hebrew manuscripts were removed from the library of the Oratoire de Jésus et de Marie and deposited in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. In 1990, Francis Richard argued that this corpus – formed, in his view, by 204 manuscripts – was for the most part gathered together by Achille de Harlay de Sancy in the years 1611-19 (when he was French ambassador in Istanbul) and that more than half of this corpus was bought by Sancy in Istanbul, while the rest possibly originated from Venice and France. The article shows that the Hebrew manuscripts from the Oratoire are in fact 207 and argues that, with the possible exception of some few manuscripts, the whole corpus originated from Istanbul.
