Abstract:
The Jewish Center (Centrala Evreilor) was appointed by the Romanian government at the beginning of 1942 to represent the Jewish community and was empowered to implement the anti-Jewish legislation concerning forced labor, taxation, emigration, control of the local communities, and contacts with deportees in Transnistria. Although the activities of the Center were supervised by the authorities, it succeeded in minimizing the number of Jews taken for forced labor, secured relief for recruits and deportees, rescued many (including orphans) from the camps of Transnistria, and enabled the Jewish communities to normalize their existence during the rule of the fascist government, up to the Soviet liberation when it was dissolved (31 August 1944).
