A patron and collector of music, she studied harpsichord with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84) and commissioned musical compositions from both Friedemann and his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88). Archival evidence demonstrates Levy's position as an essential link in the transmission of the music of their father, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and as a catalyst for the "Bach revival" of the early nineteenth century, which was led by her great-nephew Felix Mendelssohn.     Abstract: Richard Wagners Aufsatz 'Das Judenthum in der Musik' gilt als unrühmlicher Höhepunkt einer langen Tradition antisemitischen Musikschrifttums. Die Untersuchung nimmt die geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung jüdischer Stereotype seit der Antike in den Blick, aus der heraus erst Wagners Geisteshaltung beim Verfassen seines Aufsatzes im 19. Jahrhundert verständlich wird. Das Stereotyp des 'inauthentischen Juden' wird entlang der Geschichte des Christentums, vor allem des Protestantismus bis hin zu Wagners frühen musikalischen Schriften verfolgt. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden abschließend am Beispiel des jüdischen Komponisten Giacomo Meyerbeer konkretisiert

Calico examines the cultural history of postwar Europe through the lens of the performance and reception of Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw--a short but powerful work, she argues, capable of irritating every exposed nerve in postwar Europe. A twelve-tone piece in three languages about the Holocaust, it was written for an American audience by a Jewish composer whose oeuvre had been one of the Nazis' prime exemplars of entartete (degenerate) music. Both admired and reviled as a pioneer of dodecaphony, Schoenberg had immigrated to the United States and become an American citizen. This book investigates the meanings attached to the work as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War in a kind of symbolic musical remigration, focusing on six case studies: West Germany, Austria, Norway, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Each case is unique, informed by individual geopolitical concerns, but this analysis also reveals common themes in anxieties about musical modernism, Holocaust memory and culpability, the coexistence of Jews and former Nazis, anti-Semitism, dislocation, and the presence of occupying forces on both sides of the Cold War divide"--

    Abstract: With National Socialism's arrival in Germany in 1933, Jews dominated music more than virtually any other sector, making it the most important cultural front in the Nazi fight for German identity. This groundbreaking book looks at the Jewish composers and musicians banned by the Third Reich and the consequences for music throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Because Jewish musicians and composers were, by 1933, the principal conveyors of Germany's historic traditions and the ideals of German culture, the isolation, exile and persecution of Jewish musicians by the Nazis became an act of musical self-mutilation. Michael Haas looks at the actual contribution of Jewish composers in Germany and Austria before 1933, at their increasingly precarious position in Nazi Europe, their forced emigration before and during the war, their ambivalent relationships with their countries of refuge, such as Britain and the United States and their contributions within the radically changed post-war music environment. -- Jacket

    Abstract: Sous l’Occupation, Paris ne reste pas silencieux. Peu après l’installation des Allemands, les musiciens reprennent leurs activités comme l’ensemble des artistes. Les salles de concerts et les studios radiophoniques et d’enregistrement se remettent à fonctionner. Dans ce contexte, nombre d’interprètes et de compositeurs français bénéficient de conditions de travail inédites, profitant de l’absence de concurrence étrangère conjuguée à la mise à l’écart des œuvres des compositeurs, morts ou vivants, exclus par les lois scélérates. Centré sur la musique savante, cet ouvrage collectif traite de la diffusion de la musique, grâce à des études sur quelques sociétés de concerts spécifiques à cette période, sur des œuvres du répertoire, sur la création contemporaine et sur le rôle de certains interprètes. Il met en évidence les personnalités de Francis Poulenc, Olivier Messiaen et Arthur Honegger ainsi que d’Alfred Cortot, Germaine Lubin, Charles Munch et Wilhelm Kempff, en insistant sur les ambiguïtés entretenues rétroactivement par certains acteurs de la vie musicale sur leur carrière pendant les années noires. Il analyse également la manière dont quelques grandes figures du passé (Mozart, Berlioz, Wagner) sont susceptibles de s’inscrire dans un discours de propagande, largement véhiculé par les critiques et les musicologues. Cette réflexion sur la trace mémorielle d’une époque se clôt par l’évocation de deux débats récents, qui montrent que ce passé passe difficilement.
