Band 3 der Neuausgabe der Werke des nach 1933 als Jude verfemten Schriftstellers und engen Kafka-Freundes Max Brod (1884-1968) enthält dessen 1916 erschienenen historischen Roman, der in und bei Prag zu Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts spielt (vgl. Band 4: "Die Frau nach der man sich sehnt", in dieser Nr.). Die beiden berühmtesten Astronomen ihrer Zeit, Tycho Brahe und Johannes Keppler, begegnen sich im letzten Lebensjahr Tycho Brahes und tauschen über ein Jahr lang ihre Beobachtungen und Erkenntnisse miteinander aus, bleiben sich aber wissenschaftlich wie menschlich fremd. Brod geht es in seinem Roman über 2 konträre Typen von Wissenschaftlern aber weder um die mühsame Durchsetzung des kopernikanischen Weltbildes noch um ein historisch genaues Porträt des Lebens in der Kaiser-Residenz Prag um 1600, sondern um religiöse Sinnsuche und um ein aufwühlendes Seelendrama. Gerade das aber lässt den mit vielen Klischees beladenen und oft pathetisch überzeichneten Roman, dessen Nebenfiguren blass bleiben, heute sehr zeitfern erscheinen. Nur für große Bibliotheken zur Komplettierung der Werkausgabe. (Ronald Schneider)
