Abstract: Maimonides' Letter to Samuel Ibn Tibbon is preserved in one fragment in its Judeo-Arabic original version, only, but it also survives in sixteen Hebrew manuscripts and in an early printed edition. The analysis of the textual witnesses shows that four independent Hebrew translations of different sections of the Letter were produced. An additional version found in the editio princeps and related manuscripts is a combination of one of the earlier translations and one or more additional source(s), possibly a fifth Hebrew translation. Only this last version contains in the last section on the study of philosophical books a much debated reference to Ibn Rushd and to al-Farabi's Political Regime. In view of the hybrid character of the editio princeps it is necessary to study the Letter synoptically from all the witnesses. The analysis also shows that the so-called Letter probably consists of two separate pieces written at a distance of about ten days.

Abstract: Because most readers of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed read it in translations, the exact understanding of these translations is very important for the history of the interpretation of the Guide. The aim of this article is to show that Al- Harizi's translations of the Judeo-Arabic word taʾwil have an important philosophical implication. His translations change a few critical passages in the Guide and make the radical (naturalist) interpretation of the Guide by the readers of this translation very improbable. By contrast, the translation by Samuel Ibn Tibbon makes this interpretation completely plausible (as does the Judeo-Arabic original). In my opinion the changes by Al-Harizi are part of his more traditional conservative interpretation of the Guide.

Abstract: This paper is dedicated to a systematic analysis of the argumentative aspect of Abigail’s speech, which is the primary pivot of the speech. The argument is founded on two separate demands of David by Abigail: preventing the spilling of innocent blood, and avoiding self-redemption. These two demands relate to two different facets in David’s plan, exemplify different ideas, and attest to Abigail’s varied motivations. The discussion explores the legitimacy of David’s self-redemption, and its conclusions reveal a new facet in Abigail’s speech, which clarifies her dual function in the narrative.

Abstract: The article deals with medieval Jewish exegesis on Ps. 30. Jewish commentators found it hard to interpret the superscription of the psalm, since the superscription mentions the dedication of a house (presumably, the Temple) and it also mentions David, while the Bible explicitly says that the Temple wasn’t built in David’s time. On top of that, the commentators struggled to find a connection between the superscription and the psalm itself. The commentators tried to solve this problem in several ways, but one can discern that the commentators writing in Judeo-Arabic were beginning to realize that the psalm can be interpreted on its own, without the superscription. Yefet b. ‘Eli and Moses b. Jiqitila underscored the significance of the illness and cure motif in the psalm. Based on this approach, R. Abraham Ibn Ezra claimed that the psalm should first be interpreted on its own, as a psalm discussing a cure from illness, regardless of the superscription, and only later be linked to the superscription. Ibn Ezra’s Commentary has influenced several commentators in Christian Europe. However, none of them seems to have embraced his approach as to the centrality of cure from illness motif in the interpretation of the psalm.

Abstract: In this article, I survey exegetical approaches to the “blind and lame,” using disability studies and close readings to expose ableist bias. I also present my reading, in which I propose that the blind and lame are disabled persons whom David hates not just because of who they are, but also because of the fears they provoke. He is afraid. Disabled bodies can be unpredictable, untamable, and uncertain. David has no idea what his enemies are capable of, because “blind” and “lame” are vague and amorphous labels. Parading blind people and lame people on the ramparts does not display the weakest people in a strong city but displays people of unknown strengths.

Abstract: The article deals with the characterization of King David in Yefet b. Eli's commentary on the Book of Psalms. Yefet treated the psalms attributed to David as a detailed account of events that actually occurred in David's life, even though no such events are mentioned in the books of Samuel, Kings or Chronicles. It is my suggestion that Yefet did so in order to counterbalance Christian Syriac notions, according to which the headings of the psalms (»for David«) are unreliable late additions and the psalms attributed to David have no real connection with David. This Christian concept could have been considered as a support for the Muslim contention that the Hebrew text of the Bible (as the Jews read it) is distorted.

Abstract: The books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel both use the phrase עשׂה מִשְׁפָט וּצְדָקָה (“doing justice and righteousness”) to discuss the responsibilities of the Davidic king and the future of Judah in light of the disruptive events of the early sixth century BCE. The tradition of linking the terms מִשְׁפָט and צְדָקָה with kingship is widespread in the Hebrew Bible and has strong ancient Near Eastern parallels. Yet the books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel employ the two words as part of an idiomatic phrase, reflecting their divergent interpretations of the role and identity of the future Davidic king and, relatedly, what עשׂה מִשְׁפָט וּצְדָקָה entails. While the two books’ disagreements can be explained to some extent by their different settings (Judah and Egypt versus Babylonia), their distinct preferences for one Davidic line over another are suggestive of opposing political allegiances that may have contributed to neither book acknowledging the other’s existence.

Abstract: The giving of the Torah at Sinai is the cornerstone of Jewish faith in divine revelation. Yet the account in the book of Exodus (19–20) is riddled with questionable descriptions that have puzzled commentators and exegetes from early midrash onward. In the early twentieth century, Hermann Cohen (1842–1918) and Franz Rosenzweig (1886–1929) attempted to reconcile the advent of modern philosophy with the bequeathal of Jewish tradition. From their viewpoint, Ex 19–20 raised epistemological difficulties and was fraught with questionable ontological assertions. Yet, since revelation, premised on its classic Jewish formulations, was central to the thought of Cohen and Rosenzweig alike, Sinai could neither be ignored nor silenced; it had to be accommodated. This essay traces the interpretive strategies Cohen and Rosenzweig employed to construct philosophical conceptions of revelation grounded in biblical prooftexts. A close reading of Cohen's The Religion of Reason Out of the Sources of Judaism and Rosenzweig's The Star of Redemption shows that by choosing alternative biblical prooftexts (Cohen: Deuteronomy; Rosenzweig: Song of Songs), they endorsed the historical impact of Sinai on the Jewish idea of revelation without accepting it as a historically verifiable event. The essay suggests that the reliance of the two philosophers on rabbinic literature to complete their interpretive strategies is the most subtle and illuminating aspect of their reception of Sinaitic revelation.

Abstract: Contrary to the classical denial of bodily attributes or human emotions to God, both Samson Raphael Hirsch and Franz Rosenzweig embrace biblical anthropomorphisms. Their views on anthropomorphisms are part of their critiques of philosophy, especially of the basic preconceptions of the philosophical approach to the concept of God. This article analyses their positions by examining Hirsch’s commentaries on scripture (especially Gen 6:6), and Rosenzweig’s “A Note on Anthropomorphisms in Response to the Encyclopedia Judaica’s Article.” Through a close reading and interpretation of Rabad of Posquiére’s famous animadversion against Maimonides’s rule concerning heretics, this paper retraces the rabbinical roots of Hirsch’s and Rosenzweig’s approach to anthropomorphisms.

Abstract: In a polemic against Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig of 1926, Siegfried Kracauer (1889–1966) insisted that truth had come to reside in the spheres of the profane. The following article explains the theology of history underlying Kracauer’s postulate and traces its literary, political and philosophical variants in his texts and his correspondences. Prima facie, his single-minded focus on the profane seems to point to a form of negative theology. Relying on vague references to the Jewish prohibition of the image, Kracauer implies that the absolute may be identified only by critiquing profane reality. This claim notwithstanding, Kracauer repeatedly points to positive motifs too. His notion of Jewishness as the particularist embodiment of a universal form of reason and his references to hedonistic and aesthetic experiences that embody the Messianic are cases in point. While the latter tended ultimately to reflect Buber’s concept of Hasidism, Kracauer explicated this approach in his treatment of (actually or supposedly) Jewish artists such as Franz Kafka, Jacques Offenbach and Charlie Chaplin. Kracauer’s canonization of these figures as nonconformists bears a notable resemblance to Isaac Deutscher’s concept of the “non-Jewish Jew” and Hannah Arendt’s notion of the “Jew as pariah”.

Abstract: This article argues that Moses Maimonides's Guide of the Perplexed first became known to a Latin Christian audience in Toledo before 1220, and that the section of it translated as the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis in 1223–24 (Guide III.29–49) is the work of Samuel ibn Tibbon and Michael Scot. Moreover, the introduction to exegesis that prefaces the translation reflects the work of ibn Tibbon. The article considers the impact early contact with the Guide had, first in Toledo, and then in Paris and Provence. The Guide presented a God who worked through the principles of Aristotelian physics, and offered an incentive to translate and study those works of Aristotle and his interpreters that illuminated these questions. Texts translated in Toledo under the inspiration of the Guide became core texts for Paris scholastics. William of Auvergne, the first Parisian scholar to use the translation, would play a key role in the trial of the Talmud. And Cardinal Romanus, to whom the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis was dedicated, is implicated in the controversy of the Guide itself among Jews at Montpellier.

Abstract: The narratological instrument of internal focalization offers a hitherto unexplored perspective on the narratives in 1 Samuel, in general, and on the Jonathan narratives, in particular. Internal focalization means that, in the narrative, the viewpoint of a character in the story is chosen, though not necessarily that of the main character. It appears that in contrast to most of the Old Testament (OT) prose, the book of 1 Samuel is abundant in the varying use of internal focalization. Applied to the David-Jonathan narratives, it is Jonathan who is the internal focalizer. This means we read about Jonathan’s thoughts, emotions, and perceptions instead of David’s. David, however, acts as focalized object, which means the focus of attention of the internal focalizer (Jonathan) is on David. This new perspective on the David-Jonathan narratives leads to fresh insights into the issue of the seemingly one-sided love of Jonathan for David. This may very well be explained by the fact that Jonathan is the internal focalizer. Hence, we read about his feelings for David. It does not necessarily mean that David has no similar feelings for Jonathan, but the narrator simply does not highlight these.

Abstract: This study makes the case that within the books of Samuel-Kings as a whole, the book of Samuel presents two nested iterations of paradigmatic history, each of which anticipates the subsequent monarchic history with a distinct thematic focus. The more detailed of these two iterations—the story of Saul’s and David’s reigns in 1 Sam 9– 2 Sam 24—typologically anticipates the subsequent history of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah as narrated in 1 Kgs 12–2 Kgs 25. This paradigmatic “preview” of the fates of Israel and Judah is further condensed in the stories about Eli and Samuel in 1 Sam 1–8, which anticipate elements from 1 Sam 9–2 Sam 24, the book of Kings, and beyond.

Abstract: Among biblical accounts that invite skepticism, the antediluvian genealogies of Genesis have long attracted attention, with Methuselah famously living close to a millennium and others nearly as long. This study explores an analysis of the issue and its cognates in Revealer of Secrets (Ẓafenat paʿneaḥ), a fourteenth-century Torah commentary by Eleazar Ashkenazi that has only recently reentered the light of history. Striking is Eleazar’s teaching that Moses composed the chrono-genealogies in Genesis based on sundry traditions that contained “imprecise narrative hyperboles.” Eleazar also suggests that the patriarchal narratives are a “noble ruse” designed to inculcate belief in the world’s creation. Eleazar's exploration of the topic provides an entrée into the fertile mind and spirited pen of this barely known late medieval rationalist as well as into an unstudied chapter in the history of Jewish reflection on a challenging biblical crux that evoked much reflection and a rich medley of larger religious themes.

Abstract: Abraham Abulafia was a unique Jewish mystic of the thirteenth century. He was well versed in the works of Moses Maimonides and other philosophers and also had a deep understanding of letter permutation mysticism developed from various commentaries of Sefer YeṢirah. These diverse influences led Abulafia to develop a world-view emphasizing the differences between philosophical, traditional and Kabbalistic discourses. However, he argued that, ultimately, they refer to similar dynamics. This article focuses on the central role of divine flow (shefa) and the holy spirit in Abulafia's thought. The concept of the holy spirit as overflow was widely used in medieval literature across various religious traditions, such as Judaism, Islam and Christianity, to understand the nature of divine agency, causality and inspiration. Abulafia utilized this broad understanding to argue that all forms of discourse, whether philosophical or religious, are limited forms of the divine overflow. The only actual reality is the unified flow that transcends all forms of discourse and metaphysical and mental structures. Therefore, according to Abulafia, the mystical path is to transcend all forms of discourse and one's mental faculties and reach the state of union with the absolute divine flux.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish readings of the Akedah, the Binding of Isaac, remain almost entirely oblivious to the antinomy between ethics and the revealed divine command that many modern interpretations find at the heart of the story. This study explores an exception, the teaching of the fourteenth-century rationalist, Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan Ha-Bavli. In his Revealer of Secrets, Eleazar seeks a remedy for what he takes to be the theological and moral scandals that arise when the Akedah is read according to its plain sense. While Eleazar’s treatment of the Akedah builds in many ways on that of Maimonides, it also adds novel layers regarding this most difficult of biblical accounts. For this reason, the study begins with a substantial review of Maimonides’ intentionally elusive treatment of the Akedah and its reception among some representative later medieval interlocutors. Turning to its main focus, the article supplies a case study in medieval Jewish rationalism at its limits, in both matter and manner.

Abstract: Armed conflict situations are more than just sites of violence, destruction, scars, torture, rape, and death; they are also sites of disability production through direct causes and indirectly through disruption of societal services, which would otherwise prevent disabilities. In this paper, the David Narrative in 2 Samuel is reread as an armed conflict text centered on power, disempowerment, and control issues. In this rereading, the imagery of disability is viewed as a symbol of terror to instill fear and deter rebels and traitors.

Abstract: This paper analyzes two transformative conceptions of qedushah (holiness) in medieval Jewish thought, Moses Maimonides’s and Moses Nahmanides’s. Maimonides reduces qedushah to the Mosaic commandments which he reconceives as communal institutions to constrain bodily desires and promote intellectualist values and as training for perfected individuals to de-corporealize themselves in imitation of God. Nahmanides argues that Maimonides’s legal reduction of qedushah leads to the absurd conclusion that the perfectly scrupulous law-abiding scoundrel who exploits loopholes in the law is qadosh! He therefore reconceives qedushah as a complement to the Mosaic commandments intended to counter the problem of the scoundrel. Thus qedushah is re-born as a corrective to abuse of the Law. Nahmanides then proposes two ways to achieve this goal: i) by rabbinic enactment of more laws to fill in (loop) holes in the Law and ii) by cultivating a virtue-oriented, non-legal conception of holiness as a character-trait that leads agents to act properly and spontaneously without legislation. For Maimonides the ultimate state of qedushah is the dis-embodied state of the intellect, for Nahmanides it is a state in which the whole person, body and soul, clings to the deity.

Abstract: The meaning of the enigmatic verse of Acts 15:21, not to mention the issues around the preceding Apostolic Decree (vv. 19–20), has largely been researched individually and historical-critically. By contrast, in this study I explicate the meaning of the verse within the broader scope of James’s speech by attending to the Jewish spatiality on Luke’s narrative-ideological plane. The Lukan James’s speech tightly combines intertextual elements that bear on significant Jewish spatiality, namely, the restored tent of David (v. 16) within the quotation of Amos 9:11–12, the alluded-to holy land (v. 20) drawn from Lev 17–18 as the background of the decree, and the Jewish synagogues in every city (v. 21) as the background of James’s final invocation of Moses. From this perspective, I propose that v. 21 is part of the Lukan narrative-ideological portrait that reconfigures the holy land’s purity concern via the eschatological presence of the restored Davidic tent, making it relevant to the larger Greco-Roman world in accordance with the continuing monotheistic cultic sanctity.

Abstract: This essay examines the literary and compositional inclusion of the story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Sam 11–12, in the stretch of narrative concerning David’s court in 2 Samuel, particularly in light of current debates surrounding the so-called Succession Narrative. I argue that the sex-and-murder scandal of 2 Sam 11–12 functions within a Judahite ideology of kingship to legitimize and strengthen the power of the Davidic dynasty and was inserted in rejection of northern notions of a monarchy legitimized through popular support and agency. Drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt and recent studies on sex scandals in politics, I highlight three ways in which the insertion of the scandal in 2 Sam 11–12 is an effective way of transforming the monarchic ideology of 2 Sam 13–20 and casting the narrative favorably for the Davidic kings: the location of the transgression in an incontestable space, analogous to Arendt’s notion of the private realm; the salaciousness of the narrative effecting enjoyment in the audience; and the distinction between scandal and corruption, where David’s transgression is a single aberration, compared to the northern kingdom portrayed as systemically corrupt.

Abstract: At first glance, it seems obvious that the secret with which Franz Rosenzweig is occupied in his 1928 essay “Secret of the Form of Biblical Narratives” is the inexplicit form through which the Bible transmits the meaning of its narratives. But the claim put forward in this article is that the role of intertextual allusions in determining the Bible’s meaning—concealed from those not privy to this literary device—is neither the only nor the most consequential secret to which Rosenzweig wishes to draw his readers’ attention in his essay. The more far-reaching secret Rosenzweig seeks to convey involves the redemptive role readers of the Bible are intended to play when they bring their respective acts of biblical interpretation into conversation with one another.

Abstract: The text of 1 S 2,1-10, forms inclusion with 2 S 22, a parallel to Ps 18, in theline of the function of Ps 18 in the Psalter and constitutes a new affirmation ofthe Davidic messianism in front of the menaces against David, particularly fromSaul in the Books of Samuel. These menaces are mentioned in the titles of thePsalms 52; 54; 57; 59. Saul (š’wl) is assimilated to the Sheol (š’wl) in Ps 18,6. Thislast term constitutes an inclusion of the books of Samuel between 1 S 2,6 and 2S 22,6.
