    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Die Gesetzesthematik ist im hebräischen Esterbuch omnipräsent. Einerseits erzählt es von einem Königreich, in dem es für fast alles ein Gesetz gibt. Andererseits wird die Ausrottung von Esters und Mordechais Volk damit begründet, dass es anderen als den königlichen Gesetzen folge. Trotz dieses Befundes fehlt eine umfassende Untersuchung zu Bedeutung und Funktion des Themas. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sich dieser Aufgabe an. Unter Berücksichtigung von Motivkonstellationen und intertextuellen Bezügen bietet sie eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Erzählfassung, die Gott bekanntlich unerwähnt lässt. Die Analyse erlaubt den Schluss, dass insbesondere der Motivkomplex "König als Ordnungsinstanz" eine theologische Dimension einspielt, denn im Spiegel irdisch-königlicher Rechtsverdrehung gewinnen der wahre Gottkönig JHWH und seine Tora an Kontur. Schließlich bietet die Studie eine Einordnung der Erzählung als Beitrag zum Toradiskurs der vormakkabäischen hellenistischen Zeit

    Abstract: "Als international anerkannter Experte für die Geschicht jüdischer, christlicher und islamischer Kulturen verschränkt David Nirenberg in diesem Essay die Betrachtung von biologisch geprägter Diskriminierung und Verfolgung mit jener der religiösen Diskriminierung von Menschen. Am Beispiel der kastilischen Christen im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert sowie der muslimischen Almohaden in Nordafrika und Iberien im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert zeigt er, wie unterschiedliche religiöse Kulturen Konzepte hervorbrachten, die bemerkenswerte Ähnlichkeiten zu moderner rassistischer Diskriminierung aufwiesen. Anschließend weitet er den Blick und fragt, wie eine allgemeine Geschichte der Verbindung von kulturellen Konzepten der Ähnlichkeit und Differenz mit Ideen der biologischen Reproduktion geschrieben werden könnte.

    Abstract: This volume contains an English translation of the Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Proverbs composed by one of the most acclaimed, innovative, and prolific exegetes of the Karaite “Golden Age” (10th –11th centuries), Yefet ben ʿEli ha-Levi. A critical edition and an extensive introduction was published by Ilana Sasson as vol. 1 (KTS 8) in 2016. Dr. Sasson worked for many years on an English translation of the work and, before her untimely death in 2017, passed her unfinished manuscript to the series editors. The translation was then completed, edited, and prepared for publication by Dr. Wechsler. Yefet’s commentary on Proverbs is a masterpiece of literary and rational-contextual analysis of one of the most difficult and important books of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. His work is an invaluable link in the history of interpretation of the book of Proverbs

    Abstract: Although the Enlightenment had seemed to bring an end to the widely held belief that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes, charges of the so-called blood libel were surprisingly widespread in central and eastern Europe on either side of the turn to the twentieth century. Well over one hundred accusations were made against Jews in this period, and prosecutors and government officials in Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia broke with long established precedent to bring six of these cases forward in sensational public trials. In Blood Inscriptions Hillel J. Kieval examines four cases-the prosecutions that took place at Tiszaeszlár in Hungary (1882-83), Xanten in Germany (1891-92), Polná in Austrian Bohemia (1899-1900), and Konitz, then Germany, now in Poland (1900-1902)-to consider the means by which discredited beliefs came to seem once again plausible.Kieval explores how educated elites took up the accusations of Jewish ritual murder and considers the roles played by government bureaucracies, the journalistic establishment, forensic medicine, and advanced legal practices in structuring the investigations and trials. The prosecutors, judges, forensic scientists, criminologists, and academic scholars of Judaism and other expert witnesses all worked hard to establish their epistemological authority as rationalists, Kieval contends. Far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, these ritual murder trials were in all respects a product of post-Enlightenment politics and culture. Harnessed to and disciplined by the rhetoric of modernity, they were able to proceed precisely because they were framed by the idioms of scientific discourse and rationality

    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well.     Abstract: "This volume both reflects on the contested nature of the Wisdom Literature category and takes advantage of the opportunities it presents for reconsidering the concept of wisdom more independently from it. The first half explores wisdom as a concept, with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order in the Hebrew Bible, its meaning in related cultures, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation, and, finally, its continuing relevance the modern world, including in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, and from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The latter half considers "Wisdom Literature" as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature's relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of "Wisdom influence") is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of the Wisdom Literature category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from "Wisdom Literature" as category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments"--

    Abstract: In this volume, Tzvi Abusch presents studies written over a span of forty years that were completed prior to his retirement from Brandeis University in 2019. They reflect several themes that he has pursued in addition to his work on witchcraft literature and the Epic of Gilgamesh. The volume begins with general articles on Mesopotamian magic, religion, and mythology; these are followed by a set of articles on Akkadian prayers, especially šuillas , focusing, first of all, on exegetical and linguistic (synchronic) studies and, then, on diachronic analyses; part two contains a series of literary studies of Mesopotamian and biblical classics; part three is devoted to comparative studies of terms and phenomena; finally, the fourth part takes up texts that are of legal interest. The Harvard Semitic Studies series publishes volumes from the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East.     Abstract: Biblische Frauen werden in der jüdischen Tradition vielfältig rezipiert. Das wird zunächst an einzelnen Frauenfiguren wie Sara, Eva, Ester, Judit und der "tüchtigen Frau" aus dem Buch der Sprichwörter aufgezeigt. Eine besondere Rolle kommt dem Hohelied zu, das nicht nur in der mittelalterlichen Exegese rezipiert wird, sondern ebenso in Gedichten aus Andalusien. Hier wurden auch Ester oder Zion als Frau auf kunstvolle Weise verarbeitet und Theologie, Liturgie und Lyrik, aber auch Judentum und Islam kamen ins Gespräch. In einem anderen geografischen Raum, bei den am Rhein ansässigen aschkenasischen Chassiden, werden weibliche Figuren der Bibel zu Modellen für die eigene ethisch-moralische und theologische Orientierung. Von großer Bedeutung in dieser Zeit ist die jüdische Mystik, in welcher der weibliche Aspekt der Gottheit betont wird.

    Abstract: In The Cave 3 Copper Scroll: A Symbolic Journey , Jesper Høgenhavn presents a reading of the Copper Scroll as a literary text. For more than 60 years, scholars have debated whether or not the treasures recorded here reflect historical realities. This study argues that the dichotomy between “facts” and “fiction” is inadequate for a proper understanding of the Copper Scroll. The document was designed to convey specific images to its readers, thus staying true to the format of an instruction for retrieving hidden treasures. Yet, the evoked landscape is dense with symbolical associations, and the journey through it reflects deliberate narrative patterns. The scroll was written against the background of the social and political turmoil of Jewish Palestine in the 1st century CE, and reflects contemporary concerns and interests

    Abstract: The relationship between the public sphere and religion is one of the great classics of the history of humanities. To this day, it has lost none of its topicality. Sociologists and political scientists continue to refer with great frequency to a return of religions to the public sphere. In the course of secularization, globalization and digitalization, modern public spheres and religions find themselves in an increasingly complex web of mutual transformation. Public education and university research represent two key issues of this intensive interrelation. The contributions collected in the present volume illuminate selected aspects of this broad field from the end of the 18th century to the present.

    Abstract: Der Kampf um die Bibel zeigt die Wurzeln des interpretativen Konflikts auf um die Hebräische Bibel/ das Alte Testament, die gemeinsamer wichtiger heiliger Texte aller Abrahamitischen Religionen ist. Insbesondere werden die aus den Kämpfen resultierenden Kontroversen in der jüdischen Literatur wiedergegeben. Im Fokus stehen vor allem jüdische Quellen aus der späten Zweiten Tempelzeit über das Hohe Mittelalter und dem Beginn der Frühen Neuzeit. Ferner wird gezeigt, wie das Studium der Heiligen Schriften nach der Zerstörung des Zweiten Tempels zur Grundlage des jüdischen Lebens in seiner konfliktreichen Geschichte geworden ist.

    Abstract: Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) is often held to be one of the most important Jewish philosophers of the nineteenth century. Paul E. Nahme, in this new consideration of Cohen, liberalism, and religion, emphasizes the idea of enchantment, or the faith in and commitment to ideas, reason, and critique-the animating spirits that move society forward. Nahme views Cohen through the lenses of the crises of Imperial Germany-the rise of antisemitism, nationalism, and secularization-to come to a greater understanding of liberalism, its Protestant and Jewish roots, and the spirits of modernity and tradition that form its foundation. Nahme's philosophical and historical retelling of the story of Cohen and his spiritual investment in liberal theology present a strong argument for religious pluralism and public reason in a world rife with populism, identity politics, and conspiracy theories.

    Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous. The collection argues that the aggressive tone of many polemical texts has until now blinded historiography to the interconnected nature of social and cultural intimacy, above all in dialogue and cultural transfer in later medieval Iberia.     Abstract: In den tagespolitischen Diskussionen kommen Religionen meist als Ursachen oder Rechtfertigungen für gewalttätige Konflikte vor. Der Friedensforscher Weingardt möchte hier dagegenhalten und das "Friedenspotential" von Religionen deutlich machen. Nach einer Einführung, die die Begriffe und Konfliktmodelle der Friedensforschung kurz erklärt, stellt er 10 Methoden der Friedensarbeit vor, bei denen auch Führer und prominente Sprecher der Weltreligionen eine bedeutende Rolle spielten und spielen. Darunter sind geläufige Aktionsformen wie "Gewaltfreie Aktion", Friedensmarsch", "Dialog" und "Vermittlung" und weniger bekannte wie "Training For Peace" und "Mediation". Die allgemeinen Beschreibungen werden durch zahlreiche positive, auch erfolgreiche Beispiele aus aller Welt konkretisiert. Alle grossen Religionen kommen zum Zuge, auch der derzeit hart kritisierte Islam, dessen Friedensinitiativen, wie z.B. 1994 in Ruanda, kaum publiziert werden. Die Beispiele aus unserem Land sollen zum eigenen Engagement, auch an Schulen, ermutigen. Mit Kontaktadressen, und vielen weiterhelfenden Informationen. (2 S)

    Abstract: Fighting over the Bible explores the bitter conflicts between main stream Jews and their internal and external opponents, especially between particular Jewish groups such as Pharisees, Sadducees, Qumranites, Samaritans, Rabbanites and Karaites, as well as with Christians and Muslims regarding their interpretations of Jewish Scripture. The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is an important sacred text for all branches of the Abrahamic faiths, but it has more often divided than unified them. This volume explores and exemplifies the roots of these interpretive conflicts and controversies and traces the rich exegetical and theological approaches that grew out of them. Focusing on the Jewish sources from the late Second Temple period through the high Middle-Ages, it illustrates how the study of the Bible filled the vacuum left by the Temple’s destruction, and became the foundation of Jewish life throughout its long conflicted history

Usually seen as a tool for textual criticism, when read as a work of literature, the Vulgate reflects a Late Antique conception of Hebrew grammar, critical use of Greek biblical traditions, rabbinic influence, Christian interpretation, and Classical style and motifs. Instead of typically treating the text of the Vulgate and Jerome himself separately, Matthew Kraus uncovers Late Antiquity in the many facets of the translator at work—grammarian, biblical exegete, Septuagint scholar, Christian intellectual, rabbinic correspondent, and devotee of Classical literature

    Abstract: In Hebrews and the Temple Philip Church argues that the silence of Hebrews concerning the temple does not mean that the author is not interested in the temple. He writes to encourage his readers to abandon their preoccupation with it and to follow Jesus to their eschatological goal. Following extensive discussions of attitudes to the temple in the literature of Second Temple Judaism, Church turns to Hebrews and argues that the temple is presented there as a symbolic foreshadowing of the eschatological dwelling of God with his people. Now that the eschatological moment has arrived with the exaltation of Christ to the right hand of God, preoccupation with the temple and its rituals must cease

    Abstract: Islam in the Post-Secular Society: Religion, Secularity and the Antagonism of Recalcitrant Faith critically examines the unique challenges facing Muslims in Europe and North America. From the philosophical perspective of the Frankfurt School’s critical theory, this book attempts not only to diagnose the current problems stemming from a marginalization of Islam in the secular West, but also to offer a proposal for a Habermasian discourse between the religious and the secular.     Abstract: Scholars of Hebrews have repeatedly echoed the almost proverbial saying that the book appears to its reader as a "Melchizedekian being without genealogy". For such scholars the aphorism identified prominent traits of Hebrews, its enigma, its otherness, its marginality. Although Franz Overbeck might unintentionally have stimulated such correlations, they do not represent what his dictum originally meant. Writing during the high noon of historicism in 1880, Overbeck lamented a lack of historical context, one that he had deduced on the basis of flawed presuppositions of the ideological frameworks prevalent of his time. His assertion made an impact, and consequently Hebrews was not only "othered" within New Testament scholarship, its context was neglected and by some, even judged as irrelevant altogether. Understandably, the neglect created a deficit keenly felt by more recent scholarship, which has developed a particular interest in Hebrews’ contexts. Hebrews in Contexts , edited by Gabriella Gelardini and Harold W. Attridge, is an expression of this interest. It gathers authors who explore extensively on Hebrews’ relations to other early traditions and texts (Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman) in order to map Hebrews’ historical, cultural, and religious identity in greater, and perhaps surprising detail

    Abstract: In 'Reading the Rabbis' Eva De Visscher examines the Hebrew scholarship of Englishman Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194). Chiefly known as the loyal secretary and hagiographer of Archbishop Thomas Becket and enemy of Henry II, he appears here as an outstanding Hebraist whose linguistic proficiency and engagement with Rabbinic sources, including contemporary teachers, were unique for a northern-European Christian of his time. Two commentaries on the Psalms by Herbert form the focus of scrutiny. In demonstrating influence from Jewish and Christian texts such as Rashi, Hebrew-French glossaries, Hebrew-Latin Psalters, and Victorine scholarship, De Visscher situates Herbert within the context of an increased interest in the revision of Jerome's Latin Bible and literal exegesis, and a heightened Christian awareness of Jewish "other-ness"
