Abstract: "In this gripping graphic novel, a Jewish journalist encounters an extension of the horrors of the Holocaust in North Africa. In the lead-up to World War II, the rising tide of fascism and antisemitism in Europe foreshadowed Hitler's genocidal campaign against Jews. But the horrors of the Holocaust were not limited to the concentration camps of Europe: antisemitic terror spread through Vichy French imperial channels to France's colonies in North Africa, where in the forced labor camps of Algeria and Morocco, Jews and other "undesirables" faced brutal conditions and struggled to survive in an unforgiving landscape quite unlike Europe. In this richly historical graphic novel, historian Aomar Boum and illustrator Nadjib Berber take us inside this lesser-known side of the traumas wrought by the Holocaust by following one man's journey as a Holocaust refugee.
Abstract: Hans Frank is a Jewish journalist covering politics in Berlin, who grows increasingly uneasy as he witnesses the Nazi Party consolidate power and decides to flee Germany. Through connections with a transnational network of activists organizing against fascism and anti-Semitism, Hans ultimately lands in French Algeria, where days after his arrival, the Vichy regime designates all foreign Jews as "undesirables" and calls for their internment. On his way to Morocco, he is detained by Vichy authorities and interned first at Le Vernet, then later transported to different camps in the deserts of Morocco and Algeria. With memories of his former life as a political journalist receding like a dream, Hans spends the next year and a half in forced labor camps, hearing the stories of others whose lives have been upended by violence and war.

Abstract: "The Sassoons traces the global history of the Sassoon family, entrepreneurs and patrons of remarkable art and architecture, from Baghdad to Mumbai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and London"--
Abstract: "The Sassoons were prosperous as bankers and treasurers to the Ottoman sultans in nineteenth-century Bagdad, until they were driven out by religious persecution. Assuming the precarious status of stateless Jews, the family dispersed, establishing businesses in Mumbai, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and London. This volume tells the sweeping global and intergenerational story of the Sassoon family through the works of art they collected. Lavishly illustrated with paintings, porcelain, manuscripts, Judaica, and architecture, it highlights family members, including numerous accomplished women, who were patrons of art and sponsors of remarkable buildings in their rarefied, upper-class worlds."--

Abstract: Responding to recent evolutions in the fields of dance and religious and secular studies, The Oxford Handbook of Jewishness and Dance documents and celebrates the significant impact of Jewish identity on a variety of communities and the dance world writ large. Focusing on North America, Europe, and Israel in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this Handbook highlights the sometimes surprising, often hidden and overlooked Jewish resonances within a range of styles from modern and postmodern dance to folk dance and flamenco. Privileging the historically marginalized voices of scholars, performers, and instructors the Handbook considers the powerful role of dance in addressing difference, such as between American and Israeli Jewish communities. In the process, contributors advocate values of social justice, like Tikkun Olam (repair of the world), debate, and humor, exploring the fascinating and potentially uncomfortable contradictions and ambiguities that characterize this robust area of research. --

Abstract: "Between 1917 and 1921, twenty years before the Holocaust began, an estimated 100,000 to 250,000 Jews were murdered in anti-Jewish pogroms across Ukraine. Lisa grew up transfixed by her grandmother Channa's stories about her family being forced to flee their hometown of Stavishche, as armies and bandit groups raided village after village, killing Jewish residents. Channa described a perilous three-year journey through Russia and Romania, led at first by a gallant American who had snuck into Ukraine to save his immediate family and ended up leading an exodus of nearly eighty to safety. With almost no published sources to validate her grandmother's tales, Lisa embarked on her incredible journey to tell Channa's story, forging connections with archivists around the world to find elusive documents to fill in the gaps of what happened in Stavishche. She also tapped into connections closer to home, gathering testimonies from her grandmother's relatives, childhood friends and neighbors. The result is a moving historical family narrative that speaks to universal human themes--the resilience and hope of ordinary people surviving the ravages of history and human cruelty. With the growing passage of time, it is unlikely that we will see another family saga emerge so richly detailing this forgotten time period. Tears Over Russia eloquently proves that true life is sometimes more compelling than fiction." --

Abstract: "The world is in crisis: antisemitism, the "longest hatred," is rearing its ugliest heads, again. Although much has been written about the subject, very little has been done to educate the public specifically about antisemitism—existing curricula are either outdated or not comprehensive, and none are designed to be engaging, especially to the younger audiences that need to learn this subject most. A Brief and Visual History of Antisemitism aims to fill that glaring gap, not merely as a history textbook but as an epidemiological study that analyzes the pathology of the antisemitism virus from ancient to modern times: when, where, and how did antisemitism first emerge? How did the disease of Jew-hatred spread so far and wide? Why has the hateful virus proven so resilient over time? The goal of this highly visual book is thus not merely to inform of what has already transpired, but to empower individuals to make sense of the avalanche of anti-Jewish invective in real-time. As an added feature, Augmented Reality technology allows readers to use their phones (and a free app) to scan highlighted areas and reveal a trove of bonus contents such as archival footage, animations, official documents, and 3D objects that offer immersive perspectives on historical landmarks."

Abstract: Symbolic Violence -- Mocking Babylonians -- Going West -- Hosting Babylonians -- The Appointment of Babylonians -- "He is one of them!": Showing the Other His Place -- Going West but Remaining at Home -- Going East -- Epilogue: Going Back and Forth
Abstract: "This new book by Reuven Kiperwasser examines the social, cultural, and religious aspects of third- to sixth-century narratives involving rabbinic figures migrating between Babylonia and Palestine. Kiperwasser draws on migration and mobility studies, comparative literature, humor and satire studies, as well as social history to reveal how border-crossing rabbis were seen as exporting features of their previous eastern context into their new western homes and vice versa. Through their writing, rabbinic authors articulated the nature and legitimacy of their own scholastic practices, knowledge, and authority in relationship to their internal others."--

In seinem neuen Fotoessay porträtiert er Persönlichkeiten – Neuankömmlinge, Alteingesessene, Konvertierte, Immigrant*innen u.a. Seine letzte Publikation ist An Archeology of Fear and Desire (2014). Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Jerusalem

Abstract: "In Eliza Davis's day, Charles Dickens was the most celebrated living writer in England. But some of his books reflected a prejudice that was all too common at the time: prejudice against Jewish people. Eliza was Jewish, and her heart hurt to see a Jewish character in Oliver Twist portrayed as ugly and selfish. She wanted to speak out about how unfair that was, even if it meant speaking out against the great man himself. So she wrote a letter to Charles Dickens. What happened next is history"--

Abstract: In 1835 a renegade group of Tasmanians wishing to expand their landholdings disembarked in what was to become Melbourne. This colonising expedition was funded by a group of investors including the Jewish convict Joseph Solomon. Thus, in Melbourne, as in the settlement of the continent itself, Jews were at the foundation of colonisation. Unlike many other settlers, these Jews predominantly came from urban backgrounds. Although principally from London, some of them had experienced other forms of Jewish urbanism--in central and eastern Europe, the Ottoman Empire and the Caribbean--and applied their experience to the formation of a new emancipated conceptualisation of urban Judaism. In Victoria, as in the other new Australian colonies, there were no civil or political restrictions on the Jewish community. With the establishment of Melbourne, Jewish settlers were required to create new communal frameworks and the religious bodies of an active Jewish life. The community's structure and the institutions they founded were a pragmatic response to the necessities of communal formation and the realities of maintaining Judaism within this colonial outpost. As with other Jewish communities in the large centres of the world, they responded to the freedoms of an emancipated society, while the political and social environment of a new city such as Melbourne provided a unique set of opportunities. Unlike in other cities where Jewish property ownership was restricted, here Jews could live and work where they chose, becoming, from the first land sales, investors in property. Subsequently as the city expanded, as developers and builders they influenced the formation of the urban fabric, while their intellectual and economic connections brought new political and intellectual ideas and networks to the colonial experience

Abstract: "There is no Book of Sarah in the Bible, so artist Sarah Lightman sets out to make her own. In this quietly subversive graphic autobiography, Lightman follows the urge to find herself in the midst of training to become an artist, observing her faith, navigating family and romantic relationships, and learning to be a mother."--Source of summary unspecified

Abstract: Introduction -- Time at the end of a Jewish century -- Tracking time in the new Jewish century : calendars in wartime ghettos -- Concentration camps, endless time, and Jewish time -- While in hiding : calendar consciousness on the edge of destruction -- At the top of the page : calendar dates in Holocaust diaries -- The Holocaust as a revolution in Jewish time : the Lubavitcher Rebbes' wartime calendar book -- Epilogue -- Appendix 1. Inventory of wartime Jewish calendars -- Appendix 2. Months of the Jewish calendar year, with their holidays and fast days -- Appendix 3. English-language rendering of Rabbi Scheiner calendar.
Abstract: "Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced--from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day. Rosen's focus on the Jewish calendar--the ultimate symbol of continuity, as weekday follows weekday and Sabbath follows Sabbath--sheds new light on how Jews maintained connections to their way of conceiving time even within the cauldron of the Holocaust."--Publisher description

Abstract: Cartoons uniting visual representation with cultural associations, can cause devastation. One picture may save a thousand words but we will never know how many hundreds of thousands of lives were not saved, how many millions of lives were not even lived, because of the climate of fear and of hate prompted and promoted by the anti-Semitic pictures of Satanic horned Jews. From the 12th to the 21st century, these cartoons, simplifying and intensifying fears and hatreds, were powerful tools in the spread of anti-Semitism. These images first appeared in medieval Christianity, reappeared in 19th and 20th century Racialism, Fascism and Marxism and today are part of the visual images of contemporary Islam; four absolutely different belief systems with different life cycles all sharing the exact same indelible meme with its exact same visual expression targeting the exact same expiatory victim. For a thousand years, the power of this fabrication has erased existential realities and, with devastating consequences, the fear generated by the image of the demonised Jew has been reflected onto the real Jew. Some of the cartoons in this book may shock our sensibilities, to many they are a vital shared social truth, to others a vile experienced reality

Abstract: This monumental tome contains the entirety of the important German artist's drawings held in the collection of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, Ohio. The AMAM was the first museum to purchase a sculpture by Hesse, Laocoon, in 1970. In gratitude for its recognition of Hesse's work, and following the artist's untimely death, her sister Helen Hesse Charash generously donated the artist's notebooks, diaries, sketchbooks, photographs and letters to the museum. Hesse's drawings played a crucial role played in her work, which in turn gave way to an array of highly innovative techniques and styles that today still defy classification. As she commented in 1970: "I had a great deal of difficulty with painting but never with drawing ... the translation or transference to a large scale and in painting was always tedious.... So I started working in relief and with line." Hesse's custom of introducing sculptural materials into drawing and painting continues to influence artmaking today. Abstract: This volume celebrates the collecting effort of perhaps the greatest of all contemporary collectors of Judaica, William Gross, of Tel Aviv. It appears on the occasion of his eightieth birthday and contains discussions of a variety of works from the Gross Family Collection, authored by friends and colleagues from the world of Jewish museums and Jewish studies. Items discussed include Hebrew manuscripts and printed works, Jewish ceremonial silver, textiles, amulets, medals and Kabbalistic texts. The articles are illustrated richly, mostly with items from the Gross Family Collection. William Gross has always cherished a very personal perspective on the items in his collection. For him Jewish life and ritual, out of which all of these items grew, is multi-faceted. He has often claimed that each individual item in his collection constitutes a window through which one can view and learn about the Jews of a particular place and time. He believes that no Judaic object can be separated both from its Jewish roots and from the more general context of the political, social, economic and artistic environment in which the Jews, who ordered, used and venerated those objects, lived. These roots and this context are what give substance to these objects, which are often collectively referred to as Jewish Art.

Abstract: One of the largest and most important palatial houses of late 18th- and early 19th-century Damascus, Bayt Farhi belonged to the Farhi family, who served as financial administrators to successive Ottoman governors in Damascus and Acre. Illustrated with extensive colour photographs, plans, and reconstruction drawings, the book brings to life the home environment of the lost elite Sephardic community of Ottoman Damascus. It will be an important resource for those studying the architecture, history, and culture of Syria and the Ottoman Empire. Bayt Farhi's outstanding architecture and decoration is documented and presented in this first comprehensive analysis of it and Damascus's other prominent Sephadic mansions Matkab 'Anbar, Bayt Dahdah, Bayt Stambouli, and Bayt Lisbona. The Hebrew poetic inscriptions in these residences reveal how the Farhis and other leading Sephardic families perceived themselves and how they presented themselves to their own community and other Damascenes. A history of the Farhis and the Jews of Damascus provides the context for these houses, along with the architectural development of the monumental Damascene courtyard house

Abstract: "One of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century and a hero of political thought, the largely unsung and often misunderstood Hannah Arendt is best known for her landmark 1951 book on openness in political life, The Origins of Totalitarianism, which, with its powerful and timely lessons for today, has become newly relevant. She led an extraordinary life. This was a woman who endured Nazi persecution firsthand, survived harrowing "escapes" from country to country in Europe, and befriended such luminaries as Walter Benjamin and Mary McCarthy, in a world inhabited by everyone from Marc Chagall and Marlene Dietrich to Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. A woman who finally had to give up her unique genius for philosophy, and her love of a very compromised man--the philosopher and Nazi-sympathizer Martin Heidegger--for what she called "love of the world". Compassionate and enlightening, playful and page-turning, New Yorker cartoonist Ken Krimstein's The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt is a strikingly illustrated portrait of a complex, controversial, deeply flawed, and irrefutably courageous woman whose intelligence and "virulent truth telling" led her to breathtaking insights into the human condition, and whose experience continues to shine a light on how to live as an individual and a public citizen in troubled times."--Amazon

Abstract: An insider's perspective on the life and influence of Israel's first native-born prime minister, his bold peace initiatives, and his tragic assassination. More than two decades have passed since prime minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassination in 1995, yet he remains an unusually intriguing and admired modern leader. A native-born Israeli, Rabin became an inextricable part of his nation's pre-state history and subsequent evolution. This revealing account of his life, character, and contributions draws not only on original research but also on the author's recollections as one of Rabin's closest aides. An awkward politician who became a statesman, a soldier who became a peacemaker, Rabin is best remembered for his valiant efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for the Oslo Accords. Itamar Rabinovich provides new insights into Rabin's relationships with powerful leaders including Bill Clinton, Jordan's King Hussein, and Henry Kissinger, his desire for an Israeli-Syrian peace plan, and the political developments that shaped his tenure. The author also assesses the repercussions of Rabin's murder: Netanyahu's ensuing election and the rise of Israel's radical right wing

Abstract: The Ashmolean Museum is home to a rich collection of artifacts covering four thousand years of Jewish history, drawn from countries as diverse as ancient Iraq, medieval England and modern Germany. Individually and collectively these unique and important objects provide a fascinating account of the evolving history of the Jewish people and their journey through time and space. Detailed text explains the historical background and usage of the selected objects, including the 'Sumerian King List' prism, (pictured featuring) text evoking the biblical story of the Flood, then relating them to their wider Jewish context. Each object will tell a story about a different aspect of Jewish life, and together they will weave into a meta-narrative of the Jewish journey from antiquity to the present day.

Abstract: "This book aims to tell the story of the Ghetto of Venice, the first in the world--the way it grew within itself, its architecture, social makeup, crafts and trades, material life, the relations between the Jewish minority and the rest of the city, and the background of relations with other Jewish settlements in Europe and the Mediterranean. One hundred and sixty works from around the world, including paintings (from Carpaccio to Bellini, and from Chagall to Balla and Sironi), drawings, books, and documents enable us to narrate a very long story, which is characterized by permeability, an openness fostered by cultural relations and exchanges. A reconstruction of the Ghetto in its various historical phases will make it possible to see exactly how the quarter grew. The Jewish religion's customs and rites, the outstanding importance of Venetian Jewish printing, the first in Europe, and the cultural, artistic, linguistic, and economic contexts are all analyzed. In short, this is the story of a complete and enthralling microcosm that grew and prospered for over four centuries within the Serenissima Republic, narrated on the occasion of the fifth centenary from its foundation."--Publisher's description

Abstract: Between 800,000 and 1 million people lost their lives at Treblinka extermination camp during the Holocaust. A further 10,000 perished in the nearby labour camp as a result of the Nazi death through work policy and ad hoc executions. Since 2007, both camps have been the subject of forensic archaeological research in order to reveal new insights into the nature and extent of Nazi persecution. This book presents the major findings of the archaeological work, which included the discovery of the gas chambers, personal effects of the victims and mass graves. It also includes artistic responses to these findings, which were commissioned as part of the international exhibition "Finding Treblinka"
Abstract: "Finding Treblinka" is an experimental exhibition which explores the application of art as a means to provide access to scientific and historic data, and open up contemporary discussions about the ways in which we relate to past events – in this case, findings at the Treblinka extermination and labour camps. The inspiration for the artists’ responses was the non-invasive archaeological and historical research that has been undertaken at Treblinka over the past seven years, which has attempted to deepen public knowledge of these events and locate new evidence concerning the nature of the Nazis’ crimes.Exhibition: The Museum of Struggle and Martyrdom Treblinka, Poland: August 2015- February 2016, The Wiener Library London, England: July-October 2016

Abstract: "Canadian labour history and working-class struggles are brought to life in this anthology of nine short comics, each one accompanied by an informative preface. Each comic showcases the inspiring efforts and determination of working people who banded together with others to fight to change the world. The history of working-class struggle is a fascinating story of conflict and coercion, of resistance and triumph. It has the drama of defeat mixed with the thrill of victory, though not always in equal measure. But, working-class history is not just interesting and exciting; it also contains important lessons for labour and social justice activists today. Illustrate! Educate! Organize! Abstract: It is now almost 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the fragmentation of the Soviet Union into a series of republics and the rejection of communist politics in much of the former Eastern Bloc. Seen by many as a victory for the capitalist West over the communist East, the geopolitics of this period was far more complicated than this. Across a series of essays and artist contributions, Red Africa explores the crosscurrents of international solidarity and friendship. The aesthetic experience of the works and the exhibition is also an invitation for the visitor to explore what Leila Ghandi and others have described as a politics of affective community. Red Africa is the culmination of a two-year research programme and exhibition project at Calvert 22, London, and Iwalewa House, Bayreuth. This traced the work of African artists and filmmakers who studied in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc under free education schemes originally offered under the Third International, discontinued during Stalin's reign, then brought back during Khruschev's thaw. Connections were particularly strong with countries such as Mozambique, Ghana, Ethiopia and Angola that were conducting liberation struggles or which, post-independence, were part of the Non-Aligned Movement which held its first Summit conference in Belgrade in 1961. Red Africa is beautifully illustrated with film stills, artworks and archival images drawing on the extensive research of the contributing artists, researchers and curators. Contributors include Onejoon Che, Radovan Cukic and Ivan Manojlovic, Ros Gray, Ana Balona de Oliveira, Burt Cesar, Filipa Cesar, Angela Ferreira, Yevgenyi Fiks, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Isaac Julien, Alexander Markov, Jo Ratcliffe, Polly Savage, Nadine Siegert, Manuela Ribeiro Sanches, The Travelling Communique Group, Milica Tomic, Tonel and Vanessa Vasic-Janekovic

Abstract: TV producer Mica Segal accompanies her grandmother, Regina, on the old lady's first return to Warsaw since she fled, pregnant by a gentile with Mica's late father, to Palestine in 1939. On the plane, the son of a friend of Regina's ebulliently accosts the women and thereafter seems to show up wherever they go, even separately. Mica shakes him by dodging into a café, where she meets a charming Pole who leads Jewish history tours. Not by chance, Regina comes on her own to the same café to meet an old man who lives in the building--yes, Mica's grandfather. While the purpose of the trip is to assert Regina's title to a building her parents had owned, what develops is an intrafamilial tiff, an ultimately fulfilling reunion, and the possible start of a romance
