    Abstract: Kurz vor Beginn des zweiten Weltkriegs gründeten österreichische Flüchtlinge in London das Austrian Centre. Anfänglich eine Selbsthilfeorganisation, die Flüchtlingen Unterstützung im Umgang mit den britischen Behörden anbot, entwickelte sich aus dem Austrian Centre bald eine sozial und kulturell engagierte Institution, die nach dem Kriegseintritt der Sowjetunion 1941 ihre politische Ausrichtung zum tragenden Prinzip machte. Das Austrian Centre war maßgeblich an der Gründung des Free Austrian Movement (FAM) beteiligt, das sich von Anfang an für die Restauration eines demokratischen und unabhängigen Nachriegsösterreich einsetzte. In diesem Sinne strebte man ein Bild österreichischer Identität jenseits des Nationalsozialismus zu entwerfen. Sämtliche Aktivitäten des Austrian Centre werden von den AutorInnen im vorliegenden Buch vor dem Hintergrund der Zeitgeschichte berücksichtigt: so etwa die wöchentlich erscheinende Zeitschrift "Zeitspiegel", Buch-Publikationen, als deren promineteste Autoren Erich Fried, Theodor Kramer und Albert Fuchs (von dem ein Auswalband zeitgleich in der Czernin-Reihe Bibliothek der Erinnerung erscheint) hervorzuheben sind, die Exilbühne "Laterndl" sowie zahlreiche musikalische Abende. Obwohl das Austrian Centre in London die Organisation des österreichischen Exils in Großbritannien war, ist es bis heute vorehmlich durch britische Wissenschaftler erforscht worden - ein Umstand, der letztlich auch den Umgang Österreichs mit seiner Exilgeschichte widerspiegelt. 1998 wurde das Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies in London gegründet, dem diese erste umfassende deutschsprachige Dokumentation des Austrian Centre zu verdanken ist.

    Abstract: The essays contained in this volume were originally delivered as papers to a conference on the German-language broadcasting of the BBC, held in London in 2002. For over sixty years, the BBC German Service was Britain's most authoritative voice to the German-speaking world, representing a virtual paradigm of British cultural and political attitudes towards Germany and Austria - and helping to define their perceptions of Britain and the British. Despite the BBC's enormous cultural standing and influence, however, this volume is the first to evaluate the Corporation's German-language broadcasting since the BBC German Service was closed down in 1999. The essays fall into three broad categories: German-language broadcasting during the Second World War, broadcasting to Germany and Austria during the Cold War, and finally a series of personal accounts from former employees of the Service.
