Abstract: The memoir was written in German one and a half years after liberation. It has the form of a witness report, written in a clear and objective tone, but nevertheless harrowing. The content: Their is no word on their life in Amsterdam before the deportation. The memoir starts with their arrest in Amsterdam, Westerbork - the place they were deported to at first - is mentioned, but not described. Bergen-Belsen gets more attention, Fritz Joseph describes daily work routine, and living conditions in the camp. Theresienstadt comes next, and the author points out the good features as opposed to his later experiences in Auschwitz. He describes the efforts to make Theresienstadt look prettier, before the International Red Cross delegation arrived. Soon thereafter, the infamous movie documentary about Thersienstadt was shot. Firtz Joseph describes many details of the false set-up. Then he was separated from his wife and deported to Auschwitz. He describes the selection process, and many other components of the horror. He was then transferred to Buchenwald, and had to work as a forced laborer at the HASAG works (former Hugo Schneider AG) at Meuselwitz near Leipzig. In 1945, the camp was evacuated and Fritz Joseph could flee. The war ended and he got treatment for his infected leg. After a few days he could return to Amsterdam where he met his wife - she had survived as well. A 10 page long It can be found in the file as well.
Abstract: Also included is an English language summary of the memoir by John and Eva Englander (2005).

Abstract: The memoir was written 1946 in Austria, shortly after her liberation. Minna recalls her deportation in February 1942. She was taken to Riga together with her parents and her husband. Her mother was killed upon their arrival. Her father and her husband were taken to Salaspils for forced labor, where the later perished. Minna, who was pregnant with her first child, was forced to undergo an abortion. She describes her experiences of Nazi sadism in the Ghetto of Riga, especially by the Ghetto commanders Krause and Roschmann. In 1943 Minna was taken for peat cutting labor to Olaine. In November 1943 Minna and her father were reunited at the concentration camp Kaiserwald near Riga. From there both were taken to Spilve - a labor camp at a German air base, which was under worse conditions than the first camp. They worked in the cold without appropriate shoes and in thin clothes. Due to the exhausting conditions Minna's father Wilhelm was getting weaker and eventually was deported to Auschwitz in April 1944. Minna was taken to Stutthof, which was overcrowded and in primitive conditions. They were taken to an exterior labor camp, where they had to build trenches for the German defense in the rain and cold. They suffered of constant hunger. In January 1945 the camp was dissolved and all sick and disabled were killed. They were marched under exhausting conditions in the snow and cold. For all missing women ten others were chosen randomly to be killed. After a week Minna was finally too exhausted to continue walking and stayed behind. The guard who was supposed to kill her fired the bullet over her head and left her for dead in the snow. She was rescued and brought to a house, where she was given food and a place to sleep. She was discovered by a German police officer, who was about to shoot her along with other Jewish fugitives. Minna was saved by her Viennese accent, which convinced him that she was a gentile woman.
Abstract: She was taken to a mobile army hospital and treated for her frozen feet. In March 1945 Minna was liberated in Lauenburg, Prussia, where she was sent by German hospitals as an unidentified Jewish patient.
Description / Table of Contents: Also included is Nini Ungar's questionnaire with the Austrian Heritage Collection, AHC 1536.

Abstract: The memoir is a translation of a diary written originally in Shanghai, during August and September of 1941, accompanied by clarifying correspondence and notes.
Abstract: The memoir starts on March 6, 1939, the day when Jerry (Gerhard) Breuer was forced to say goodbye to Vienna. He went to Brussels, Belgium, on a Kindertransport. In 1940, on the day Germany invaded Belgium, he was arrested in Brussels. He was sent on a train (which had the letters “fifth column” written on it) to Camp St. Cyprien, France, which is described in detail. The memoir ends with the departure on his ship to Shanghai.
Abstract: Also enclosed are 14 "Close shaves" by Jerry Breuer: The first "shave" describes the experience of “Kristallnacht” in November of 1938; he was arrested and brought to the Gestapo headquarters in the first district of Vienna, but then he was released because of his young age. The second episode is about the Kindertransport he took to get out of Nazi-Germany. The next episode is entitled “The certificate”, about the permission to enter the French Concession in Shanghai on May 5, 1939. Episode 4 happened when Jerry's train was bombed. The next one is about money being returned to him at Camp St. Cyprien. Then he resisted to be released from St. Cyprien camp. He lost his luggage on his way to Marseille, which helped sneak past some guards. He had an encounter with a friendly police officer who refused to send him to an internment camp; and he was lent money to pay for his exit visa. The final events took place on the voyage to Shanghai: once they were threatended by an ugly storm; the other time he was accused by a Dutch officer of being a spy for the German army, looking "too blond" for being a Jew.

Abstract: How did British Jewry respond to the Holocaust, how prominent was the Holocaust on the communal agenda and what does this response tell us about the values, politics, fears and identity of the Anglo-Jewish community? This book studies the priorities of that community, and thereby seeks to analyse the attitudes and philosophies which informed actions. It paints a picture of Anglo-Jewish life focussing on reactions to a wide range of matters in the external Gentile world. Richard Bolchover charts the transmission of the news of the European catastrophe and discusses the various theories which have thus far been posited regarding reactions in these exceptional circumstances. He investigates the structures and political philosophies of Anglo-Jewry during the war years and covers the reactions of Jewish political and religious leaders as well as prominent Jews acting outside the community's institutional framework. Various co-ordinated responses, political and philanthropic are studied, as are the issues which dominated the community at that time, namely internal conflict and the fear of increased domestic anti-Semitism: these preoccupations inevitably affected responses to events in Europe. The latter half of the book looks at the ramifications of the community's socio-political philosophies including, most radically, Zionism, and their influence on communal reactions. This is the first and only published work on this subject, and it raises major questions about the structures and priorities of the British Jewish community.

Abstract: Can the Holocaust be compellingly described or represented? Or is there some core aspect of the extermination of the Jews of Europe which resists our powers of depiction, of theory, of narrative? In this volume, twenty scholars probe the moral, epistemological, and aesthetic limits of an account or portrayal of the Nazi horror. Christopher Browning, Hayden White, Carlo Ginzburg, Martin Jay, Dominick LaCapra, and others focus first on the general question: can the record of his historical event be established objectively through documents and witnesses, or is every historical interpretation informed by the perspective of its narrator? The suggestion that all historical accounts are determined by a preestablished narrative choice raises the ethical and intellectual issues of various forms of relativization. In more specific terms, what are the possibilities of historicizing National Socialism without minimizing the historical place of the Holocaust? Also at issue are the problems related to an artistic representation, particularly the dilemmas posed by aestheticization. John Felstiner, Yael S. Feldman, Sidra Ezrahi, Eric Santner, and Anton Kaes grapple with these questions and confront the inadequacy of words in the face of the Holocaust. Others address the problem of fitting Nazi policies and atrocities into the history of Western thought and science. The book concludes with Geoffrey Hartman’s evocative meditation on memory. These essays expose to scrutiny questions that have a pressing claim on our attention, our conscience, and our cultural memory. First presented at a conference organized by Saul Friedlander, they are now made available for the wide consideration and discussion they merit.
