Abstract: "A sweeping biography that opens a window onto the gilded age of Jewish philanthropy. Baron Maurice de Hirsch was one of the emblematic figures of the nineteenth century. Above all, he was the most influential Jewish philanthropist of his time. Today Hirsch is less well known than the Rothschilds, or his gentile counterpart Andrew Carnegie, yet he was, to his contemporaries, the very embodiment of the gilded age of Jewish philanthropy. Hirsch's life provides a singular entry point for understanding Jewish philanthropy and politics in the late nineteenth century, a period when, as now, private benefactors played an outsize role in shaping the collective fate of Jewish communities. Hirsch's vast fortune derived from his role in creating the first rail line linking Western Europe with the Ottoman Empire, what came to be known as the Orient Express. Socializing with the likes of the Austrian crown prince Rudolph and "Bertie," Prince of Wales, Hirsch rose to the pinnacle of European aristocratic society, but also found himself the frequent target of vicious antisemitism. This was an era when what it meant to be Jewish--and what it meant to be European--were undergoing dramatic changes. Baron Hirsch was at the center of these historic shifts. While in his time Baron Hirsch was the subject of widespread praise, enraged political commentary, and conspiracy theories alike, his legacy is often overlooked. Responding to the crisis wrought by the mass departure of Jews from the Russian Empire at the turn of the century, Hirsch established the Jewish Colonization Association, with the goal of creating a refuge for the Jews in Argentina. When Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, advertised his plan to create a Jewish state (not without inspiration from Hirsch), he still wondered whether to do so in Palestine or in Argentina--and left the question open. In The Baron, Matthias Lehmann tells the story of this remarkable figure whose life and legacy provide a key to understanding the forces that shaped modern Jewish history"--

Abstract: "Since their arrival in the United States from Germany in 1866, the Morgenthaus have been a linchpin in American history -- losing everything only to grow rich again, assimilating, and then climbing to the country's highest ranks of power. In the words of former Mayor Ed Koch, they are "the closest thing we've got to royalty in New York City." With unprecedented, exclusive access to family archives, award-winning journalist Andrew Meier chronicles this epic American story, revealing how the Morgenthaus amassed enormous wealth, advised presidents, shaped the New Deal, decried mass murder during the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust, waged war in the Mediterranean and Pacific, and built a dynasty that would remake the city of New York. Morgenthau begins with Lazarus, who arrived in New York City dreaming of rebuilding the fortune he had lost in his homeland of Germany. While Lazarus died destitute, in shame and alone, the family would rise once again with the ascendance of Henry, who became a real estate baron, and one of the first to suggest to Woodrow Wilson that he run for president. From there, the Morgenthaus would go on to influence the most consequential presidencies of the 20th century, as Henry's son Henry, Jr., became FDR's longest-serving aide, his Treasury Secretary during the War, and his confidante of 30 years. Finally, there was Robert Morgenthau, a decorated World War II hero who went on to become the longest-tenured district attorney in the history of New York City -- "DA for life," as he was known. As DA, he oversaw some of the most important legal cases in New York of the last fifty years, from the war on the Mafia, the advent of white-collar prosecutions, to the race wars of the 1970s -- and, of course, the Central Park Five case. At heart public servants and confidantes, the Morgenthaus propelled candidates into power. But they were often forced to stand loyally on the sidelines, even as they witnessed the great moral and human cost of political expediency. The saga of the Morgenthau family has lain half-hidden in the shadows for too long. At heart a family history, Morgenthau is also an American epic, as big and improbable as the country itself"--

Abstract: "In 1937, as the Nazis gained control and anti-Semitism spread in the Free City of Danzig, a majority German city on the Baltic Sea, sixteen-year-old Justus Rosenberg was sent to Paris to finish his education in safety. Three years later, France fell to the Germans. Alone and in danger, penniless, and cut off from contact with his family in Poland, Justus fled south. A chance meeting led him to Varian Fry, an American journalist in Marseille helping thousands of men and women, including many artists and intellectuals--among them Hannah Arendt, Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, and Max Ernst--escape the Nazis. With his German background, understanding of French culture, and fluency in several languages, including English, Justus became an invaluable member of Fry's refugee network as a spy and scout. The spry blond who looked even younger than his age flourished in the underground, handling counterfeit documents, secret passwords, black market currency, surveying escape routes, and dealing with avaricious gangsters. But when Fry was eventually forced to leave France, Gussie, as he was affectionately known, could not get out. For the next four years, Justus relied on his wits and skills to escape captivity, survive several close calls with death, and continue his fight against the Nazis, working with the French Resistance and later, becoming attached with the United States Army. At the war's end, Justus emigrated to America, and built a new life. Justus' story is a powerful saga of bravery, daring, adventure, and survival with the soul of a spy thriller. Reflecting on his past, Justus sees his life as a confluence of circumstances. As he writes, 'I survived the war through a rare combination of good fortune, resourcefulness, optimism, and, most important, the kindness of many good people.'" -- Publisher's description
