Kurzfassung: In the Nazi genocide of European Jews, words preceded, accompanied, and made mass murder possible. Using a multilayered approach to connect official language to everyday life, historian Thomas Pegelow Kaplan analyzes the role of language in genocide. This study seeks to comprehend how the perpetrators constructed difference, race, and their perceived enemies; how Nazi agencies communicated to the public through the nation's press; and how Germans of Jewish ancestry received, contested, and struggled for survival and self against remarkable odds. The Language of Nazi Genocide covers the historical periods of the late Weimar Republic, the Nazi regime, and early postwar Germany. However, by addressing the architecture of conceptual separation between groups and the means by which social aggression is disseminated, this study offers a model for comparative studies of linguistic violence, hate speech, and genocide in the modern world.

Kurzfassung: "The contradictions between Wagner's antipathy toward the amorphous entity "The Jews" and his genuine friendships with individual Jews are the subject of this book. Drawing on sources, including his autobiography and diary and the diaries of his second wife, this treatment of Wagner's anti-Semitism is the first to place it in perspective with his life and work"--Provided by publisher.

Kurzfassung: "This is the first comprehensive critical study of the nineteenth-century French grand opera La Juive (Paris Opera, 1835), a powerful and successful work by the leading dramatist and librettist, Eugene Scribe, and Conservatoire-trained composer, Fromental Halevy. Hallman explores the politically charged messages of the opera within the context of French social and cultural history. The book addresses the opera's portrayal of religious intolerance and Jewish-Christian conflict in subject, setting, and characterization, viewing the anticlerical thrust of its critique as a reminder of the historical abuses of an autocratic Church and State and as reflection of the era's liberal ideology. It also considers the portrayal of the central Jewish characters in light of literary stereotypes, Jewish "emancipation" and acculturation, and contradictory, antisemitic attitudes toward Jews in French society."--BOOK JACKET.
