Abstract:
Notes that in Islamic countries wine was entirely forbidden to Muslims, whereas for non-Muslims it was restricted to religious uses. In Muslim and Jewish sources from the 15th-16th centuries, we encounter strong reactions to wine use by non-Muslims due to its perceived negative influence on the Muslim population. However, numerous sources attest to wine production and commerce on the part of Jews during this period. In the present essay, I document some 15th-16th-century realities pertaining to this prohibition, which was especially difficult for Jews living under Islamic rule. Subsequently, I present and discuss some broader evidence of Jewish involvement in wine production and commerce in Egypt during this same period.
