Abstract:
Based on a lecture delivered in Frankfurt am Main, May 1993. Shows that theological doctrine, political ideology, or historiographic theory have often determined German churchmen's and historians' perception, for good or ill, of the actual Jews who lived in their midst. Cites examples ranging from the 19th century to the present, and especially from the Nazi period, when members of the German Christian movement embraced Nazi racism, while a minister of the Confessing Church in Bremen showed solidarity with non-Aryan parishioners - and was denounced for it by other ministers.
