    Abstract: Anna Langfus a contribué à un renouvellement majeur de la littérature de la Shoah, qui, avant ses publications, était largement dominée par le récit du témoin. Elle est l’auteure de pièces de théâtre et de trois romans : Le Sel et le soufre (1960), Les Bagages de sable (1962), lauréat du prix Goncourt, et Saute, Barbara (1965). Bien qu’ayant vécu les horreurs du génocide, elle n’a pas exprimé sa souffrance par l’autobiographie. Dans son œuvre elle explore, sans pathos, la tragédie des survivants atteints par ce qu’elle appelle « la maladie de la guerre ». Ce livre étudie, entre autres, la spécificité des textes de Langfus. Ecrits à une époque où prévalait l’ethos de la victimisation, de la repentance et parfois du manichéisme, ils nous invitent à tenir à distance toute idéalisation ou fausse consolation. Anna Langfus participated in a major renewal of Holocaust literature which had been mainly testimonial and witness-focused prior to her publications. She is the author of theater plays and of three novels: Le Sel et le soufre (1960), Les Bagages de sable (1962), awarded with the Prix Goncourt, and Saute, Barbara (1965). She experienced the horrors of the Holocaust, but she refused to express her grief through autobiography. Through her work she explores, without pathos , the tragedy of those who survived, and what Anna Langfus herself calls “la maladie de la guerre”: the war disease. This books examines, among other issues, the specificity of Langfus’s texts. Written at a time when an ethos of victimization, repentance, and sometimes Manichaeism was dominant, Langfus’s they urge us to keep any form of idealization or false consolation at a distance

    Abstract: Die Untersuchung zeichnet die Entstehung des Levitismus nach. Dieser kommt erst in der spätvorexilischen Zeit als judäische Innovation des Stammeskonzeptes auf. Überlieferungen über den Jakobsohn Levi werden nach 722 in Juda zur Formung einer Gruppenidentität der Beamten und literalen Eliten genutzt. Mose und Aaron als Beamte des Gottes Israel werden Protagonisten dieser Gruppierung, weswegen man auch das Priestertum am Zentralheiligtum als Teil der Beamtenschaft integrierte, sodass u.a. im Deuteronomium von levitischen Priestern gesprochen wird. In der nachexilischen Zeit wurden eine Reihe von Berufen und Gruppen unter der Bezeichnung "Leviten" als eine Art Tempelbeamtentum der Priesterschaft unterstellt. Dabei wurde eine Professionalisierung des Kultbetriebes und eine radikale Trennung von kultischen und nichtkultischen Bereichen und Tätigkeiten vollzogen. Darin agierten die Leviten für das Volk und repräsentierten es in den nichtkultischen Bereichen des Tempels. The study tracks the origins of the Biblical Levitism. It only emerged in the late pre-exilic period as a Judean innovation of the tribal concept. After 722, traditions about Jacob's son Levi were used in Judah to form a group identity of officials and literal elites. Moses and Aaron, as officials of the God of Israel, became protagonists of this group. Therefore, the priests at the central shrine were also integrated as part of the officials, so that Deuteronomy, for example, speaks of Levitical priests. In the post-exilic period, a number of professions and groups were subordinated to the priesthood under the designation "Levites" as a kind of temple office. In the process, a professionalisation of the cultic sector and a radical separation of cultic and non-cultic areas and activities took place. In this, the Levites acted on behalf of the people and represented them in the non-cultic areas of the temple

    Abstract: "Euclid's Elements is one of the canonical texts that shaped our cultural heritage. It was translated from Greek into Arabic and from Arabic into Hebrew and Latin. There is little agreement about the textual history of the Arabic translations. The present book offers for the first time a critical edition of two Hebrew translations of Books I-II, by Moses Ibn Tibbon and by "Rabbi Jacob". A serious attempt is made to learn from the Hebrew translations also about the history of the Arabic text. The edition of Ibn Tibbon's translation is accompanied by an Arabic text which was probably its source. Rabbi Jacob's translation is compared to the Latin translation ascribed to Adelard of Bath, probably based on the same Arabic tradition"--

    Abstract: Kanade, di Goldene Medine offers a broad study of its field, with equal attention to English- and French-language materials and contexts. The volume’s essays highlight the fundamental link between the culture and life of Canadian Jews and their Polish roots. This focus brings Yiddish to the fore, in essays focusing on the history of Canadian Yiddish literature, and the relevance of the language for contemporary Canadian Chasidic communities. However, essays in this volume also highlight the writings of contemporary authors, working both in French and English. Thus, the collection explores culture at the borderlands of three languages, with an eye for the link between New Worlds and Old. Kanade, di Goldene Medine apporte une contribution importante à l’étude de la littérature et la culture juives canadiennes, tout en étant attentif aux textes et contextes anglophone et francophone ainsi qu’à l’univers particulier des juifs hassidiques de Montréal.     Abstract: In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum untersucht Christina Eschner die Auseinandersetzungen zum jüdischen Gesetz innerhalb des Urchristentums vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Diskurse im antiken Judentum. Ziel ist es, die urchristliche Praxis des Gesetzes in ihrem größeren Kontext darzustellen und ihr gegebenenfalls einen bestimmten Platz im facettenreichen Bild der zeitgenössischen jüdischen Strömungen zuzuweisen. Dabei finden Schriften aus Qumran, dem griechischsprachigen und dem rabbinischen Judentum Berücksichtigung. Der Fokus liegt auf Vorschriften zu verbotenen Speisen, zur Tischgemeinschaft und zur erlaubten Art und Weise der Nahrungsaufnahme. Auch pagane Traditionen werden einbezogen. Damit ist diese Studie besonders interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sie bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Themenfeldern der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft, der Altphilologie, der Alten Geschichte und der Judaistik. Sie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die urchristlichen Diskurse zum Essen nicht auf eine vollständige Abschaffung der entsprechenden jüdischen Gesetzesanordungen zielen. In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law

    Abstract: J. Cornelis de Vos examines the impact and reception of the Decalogue up to 200 CE, scrutinizing the versions of the Decalogue, and the history of the Decalogue in ancient Jewish writings, the New Testament, and early Christian writings. Almost all texts show an interconnection of identity and normativity: the Decalogue functions as an expression of fundamental moral concepts of socio-religious groups. At the same time, these groups enhance the Decalogue with normativity—sometimes even expanding on it—to make it a text that generates their own identity. This is the first study that presents an in-depth and continuous analysis of the early history of the Decalogue. Der Wirkung und Rezeption des Dekalogs bis 200 n.Chr. widmet sich J. Cornelis de Vos in dieser Studie. Dafür erforscht er zunächst die alten Textzeugen der beiden Dekalogfassungen, um anschließend zu fragen, wie die Zehn Gebote bei antik-jüdischen Autoren, im Neuen Testament sowie in frühchristlichen Schriften aufgenommen wurden. Es zeigt sich eine Verbindung von Normativität und Identität: Der Dekalog gilt zumeist als Ausdruck der moralischen Grundauffassungen sozioreligiöser Gruppen; er wird gleichzeitig von diesen Gruppen mit Normativität aufgeladen – manchmal sogar erweitert – gerade um als Identität stiftend für die eigene Gruppe zu gelten.     Abstract: The function of the participle within the Hebrew tense system has considerably changed between biblical and postbiblical Hebrew. This investigation studies the participle in the Hebrew manuscripts from the Judaean Desert, its formation, its usage, and its meaning, compared with those in other Hebrew traditions and dialects, especially the language of the Hebrew Bible. The biblical Hebrew tense system continues to be used in the Scrolls, while there is a clear difference between the tense system of the Scrolls and that of mishnaic Hebrew. This fact allows us to draw conclusions in the field of language studies; but it also provides us with a piece of the puzzle in our understanding of the sociology and religion of the Qumran community. Die Funktion des Partizips innerhalb des hebräischen Tempussystems wandelte sich erheblich zwischen biblischem und nach-biblischem Hebräisch. Diese Studie untersucht das Partizip in den hebräischen Handschriften aus der judäischen Wüste, seine Bildung, seine Verwendung und seine Bedeutung, im Vergleich mit anderen hebräischen Traditionen und Dialekten, vor allem der Sprache der hebräischen Bibel. Das biblisch-hebräische Tempussystem findet seine Fortsetzung in diesen Handschriften, während es einen klaren Unterschied zwischen deren Tempussystem und dem des mischnischen Hebräisch gibt. Diese Tatsache erlaubt Rückschlüsse im Bereich der Sprachwissenschaft, sie liefert aber auch einen Mosaikstein in unserem Verständnis von Gesellschaft und Religion der Qumran-Gemeinschaft

    Abstract: This book addresses different theories related to the origin of Gnosticism. The author comes to the conclusion that, if we set aside the Christian substance, in Gnostic literature – besides Platonist philosophy – the most numerous influences come from Judaism. As they have, partially, reached Gnostic literature independent from Christianity, it could validate the theory according to which we should be searching for the origin of Gnosticism in certain Judaist circles. The author analyses the use of lore from the Old Testament and Judaism in Gnostic literature. Even though this does not prove that Gnosticism has evolved from Judaism, it still shows how extensively the Judaist world of thought influenced Gnosticism and how it gives us a reason to ask whether we should consider more thoroughly the theory according to which we should be searching for the founders of Gnostic lore within certain Judaist circles of antiquity. Über den Ursprung der antiken Gnosis gibt es verschiedene Theorien, aber noch heute herrscht in dieser Frage in der Forschung kein Konsens. Der Autor dieses Buches betrachtet unterschiedliche Ursprungstheorien der Gnosis und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass (abgesehen vom christlichen Stoff) neben den Einflüssen des Mittelplatonismus der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff in der gnostischen Literatur die wichtigste Rolle spielt. Da der jüdische Stoff teilweise durch die Vermittlung des Christentums in die Gnosis gekommen ist, könnte das die alte Hypothese unterstützen, dass die Gnosis innerhalb des Christentums entstanden sei. Doch gibt es eine Vielzahl gnostischer Texte, die vom Christentum nicht beeinflusst sind, in denen aber der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielt. Diese Tatsache könnte nun die zweite alte Theorie unterstützen, nach der die Wurzeln der Gnosis im antiken Judentum liegen. Der Autor der vorliegenden Arbeit analysiert den Gebrauch der alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Überlieferungen und Motive in der gnostischen Literatur und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es nicht letztgültig bewiesen ist, dass die Gnosis aus dem Judentum heraus entstand. Doch zeigt die Untersuchung, wie große Bedeutung die alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Motive in der Gnosis gehabt haben. Dies gibt Anlass zu fragen, ob wir dennoch die Theorie ernsthaft zu erwägen haben, nach der der Ursprung der Gnosis in Kreisen des antiken Judentums zu suchen sei

"Bloodlands", das war der Raum, wo Holocaust, Stalinscher Terror und die Hungerkriege, die Stalin und Hitler entfesselten, aufeinandertrafen, sich überlagerten und potenzierten, und den an der Yale University Geschichte lehrenden Autor interessieren nicht die zugrunde liegenden Herrschaftsstrukturen (wie in der Totalitarismusdiskussion), ihn interessiert eben dieses räumliche Ineinandergreifen zweier totalitärer Regime, deren Gewalttätigkeit sich außerhalb der eigenen Grenzen mit beispiellosem Furor entlud.     Abstract: In the Hellenistic period Jews regularly encountered Greek mythology in one form or another: in literature, in art, or through language. This book is the first comprehensive study of the different strategies pursued by Jewish-Hellenistic authors as they engaged with Greek myth. The principal focus of this study is on the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, but a large range of other authors from the Third century BCE to the 1st century CE are also discussed. Far from limiting themselves to outright rejection, these authors often show a striking familiarity with Greek myth, which they sometimes even incorporated into Jewish myth. Ancient Jewish discourse on Greek myth was not primarily driven by apologetics, but constituted an important aspect of Jewish Hellenism. Juden trafen in der hellenistischen Zeit regelmässig auf griechische Mythen: in der Literatur, in der Kunst oder im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch. Dieses Buch ist die erste weitgespannte Untersuchung der unterschiedlichen Strategien, die jüdisch-hellenistische Autoren in ihrem Umgang mit griechischen Mythen anwandten. Das Hauptgewicht der Untersuchung liegt auf dem jüdischen Historiker Flavius Josephus, aber eine grosse Zahl weiterer Autoren vom 3. Jh. volumeChr. bis zum 1. Jh. n.Chr. wird auch einbezogen. Diese Autoren haben griechische Mythen nicht einfach nur verworfen.     Abstract: Vor mehr als 100 Jahren behauptete der zaristische Geheimdienst, an die Mitschriften des zionistischen Weltkongresses von 1897 gekommen zu sein. In 24 Protokollen hätten die Juden dort Pläne zur Übernahme der Weltherrschaft skizziert. Daß es sich dabei um ein Konstrukt des Antisemitismus handelt, ist schon oft wissenschaftlich bestätigt worden. Warum jedoch dieses Pamphlet mehr denn je ein zentrales Referenzdokument des Antisemitismus darstellt, ist schwieriger zu beantworten.     Abstract: The high priest Caiaphas is one of the important figures in biblical history who received little attention or sympathy in the judgement of posterity. Since the time of the old church the highest representative of the Jewish society in the time of Jesus was assessed as a wicked enemy of Jesus and the leading apostles in Jerusalem. This image obscures the religious and political efficiency of a man, who worked with great success in his office for a long period of eighteen years. What do we know about the historical Caiaphas? And what is the image of this man in the New Testament and afterwards? The present study tries to answer these questions in view of the history, the exegesis and the reception history. Der Hohepriester Kaiphas gehört zu den bedeutenden Figuren der biblischen Geschichte, denen im Urteil der Nachwelt eine geringe Aufmerksamkeit oder Sympathie entgegengebracht wurde. Seit der alten Kirche wurde der höchste Repräsentant des jüdischen Tempelstaates zur Zeit Jesu als bösartiger Feind Jesu und der führenden Apostel in Jerusalem betrachtet.     Abstract: Despite the revival of intellectual history in recent years, there is still relatively little research into German-Jewish intellectual history between 1933 and 1938. The present work studies for the first time the important discussions of the period from the debate between Leo Strauss and Julius Guttmann, Alexander Altmann’s contribution to “Jewish theology,” to the reception of the work of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Heidegger as well as the works of David Baumgardt and Fritz Heinemann. Many now forgotten texts of those discussions have been made accessible here. All the leading figures presented in this study were sooner or later forced to choose between “philosophy” and “law.”

    Abstract: This book in two volumes gives the status quaestionis of the Qumran Copper Scroll, fifty years after its discovery. The first part of volume one, amply illustrated with graphics and images, gives the technical expertise of its state of preservation together with the proposals for treatment developed by the laboratory EDF-Valectra for its restoration-conservation. The production of a facsimile by means of galvanoplasty and digitalized images is explained. The second part of volume one gives a largely renewed edition of the engraved Hebrew text with an up-to-date commentary, French and English translations, and indices. The second volume of nearly 400 plates publishes photographs and X-Rays of each segment before and after treatment, as well as the reproduction by means of galvanoplasty and digitalized images

    Abstract: This volume deals with calendar and liturgical times on the one hand. It discusses questions related to the establishment of the calendar and the observance of traditional and new feasts in Palestine and in the diaspora. On the other hand this book deals with the predetermined organization of the times. It considers the periodization of times and the idea of a revelation being carried out from one period to another; the irruption of the fixed Time and the concomitant representation of a recovery of the times; and the expectation of the last times. In particular, the texts from Qumran, the New Testament, and hellenistic Jewish literature are investigated, but older and more recent texts are taken into account as well

    Abstract: This study deals essentially with the knowledge of the Palestinian Rabbis concerning paganism in the days of Mishna and Talmud. The Late Professor Saul Lieberman wrote that “Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. It would require a large volume to treat this topic”. This valuable and exhaustive study proves methodically that the Rabbis had deeper knowledge about Syrian, Arabian, Anatolian and Graeco-Roman Pagan cults than is commonly believed. Clear, accessible and displaying considerable scholarship this work will undoubtedly provide an important challenge to both historians, archaeologists, and scholars of Rabbinic texts. *** Cette étude traite essentiellement du niveau de connaissances des Rabbins de Judée et de Galilée concernant les cultes païens dans le sens le plus large du terme. Le Professeur Saul Lieberman affirmait : “Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature.     Abstract: For decades a concordance of all the Dead Sea Scrolls has been a major desideratum for scholarship. The Dead Sea Scrolls Concordance covers all the Qumran material as published in the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series, as well as the major texts from caves 1 and 11, which appeared elsewhere. This keyword-in-context concordance, prepared by Martin G. Abegg in collaboration with other scholars, contains a new and consistent linguistic analysis of all the words found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The total number of entries is around 134,000. Every entry includes the keyword with its context, exactly as published in the editions referred to above, with notes on some readings. All keywords have an English translation, and they are listed in alphabetical order rather than by verbal root, which makes the concordance easier to consult for the non-specialist. This concordance to the non-biblical texts from Qumran is the first of a projected series of three. Future volumes will consist of concordances to the biblical texts from Qumran and to the texts from other sites in the Judean Desert. The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9789004125216)

    Abstract: Study of the exegesis of the Old Testament tradition on the matriarch Rachel. The centre of the study is Rachel’s complaint in Jeremiah 31.15-17. After an analysis of the Old Testament texts, the reception of these traditions in ancient translations in the Pseudepigrapha, in Philo of Alexandria, in Flavius Josephus as well as in the New Testament is investigated. The main part of the study is represented by source material in the Rabbinic literature. The study is concluded by an overview of the interpretation of the Rachel figure in patristic literature. The sources containing the Rachel traditions are, in part, hard to access. The source material on Rachel is presented and analyzed, in order to make the plethora of interpretations accessible to a wider audience, especially the Rabbinic interpretations

    Abstract: This volume provides important new insights into the concept of \'forgiveness\' in early Christian literature. In contrast to much of the existing literature on the notion of forgiveness, which usually focuses on the preconditions for being forgiven, the author sets out to describe the actual meanings and connotations of this concept during the period in which the New Testament was being formed. In early Christian texts the notion of forgiveness is expressed in a variety of ways. On the basis of detailed analysis of a number of early Christian and contemporary Jewish prayers the author uncovers an array of different shades of meaning, which often can be obscured in modern translations. In so doing he demonstrates the importance of this complex of meanings for early Christians, not only as part of their soteriology, but in their overall theological outlook as well

    Abstract: In this work, the author investigates Gal 1:13-14, Gal 3:6-14, 1 Thess 4:13-17, 2 Cor 12:1-10 and Rom 10:4 and then expounds how Paul, although originating from Judaism and having been educated in Jewish Biblical interpretation, reaches a new hermeneutic only after his experience of Christ. The apostle proves to be dependent neither on apocalyptic views nor on the methods of Greek Rhetoric nor on Rabbinic Midrash, although he is well versed in them. Instead, he develops a Christological interpretation of the Torah, and this interpretation becomes the centre of his mission to the non-Jews. The Torah finds its eschatological fulfillment in Christ and receives its ethical validity for the nations in the form of the love command

    Abstract: Mit zunehmendem Rechtsruck unter den vereinigten Deutschen und erneuter Hoffähigkeit offenbar nicht justitiabler rechtsextremer Positionen und Äußerungen gewinnt auch das Leugnen historischer Tatsachen neue Popularität, z.B. der mit "Auschwitz" verbundenen millionenfachen Vernichtung jüdischen Lebens, was verkürzt (und fälschlich) "Auschwitz-Lüge" genannt wird. Der als Kenner der Materie bezeichnete Autor vermittelt im 1. Teil des schmalen Bandes die historischen Fakten: "Endlösung", KZ-System, Auschwitz; im 2. Teil stellt er die Quellen zur Geschichte von Auschwitz zusammen, wirft einen Blick auf die Auschwitz-Prozesse und läßt die "revisionistische" Auschwitz-Literatur kritisch Revue passieren: Wer und was steckt hinter dieser sogenanten "Auschwitz-Lüge"? Alles in allem eine etwas zu knapp geratene, sachlich belegte, aber nicht ganz fehlerfreie Information. (2) (Friedrich Andrae)
