Die Analyse der Interaktion Ehrlichs belegt eindrucksvoll den christlichen Lernprozess, die bleibende Angewiesenheit christlicher TheologInnen auf jüdische PartnerInnen bei der Überwindung der Tradition des christlichen Antijudaismus und die Relevanz des jüdisch-christlichen Dialogs für die christliche Theologie. Die Verschränkung von Biographie und Lebenswerk Ernst Ludwig Ehrlichs verdeutlicht, dass ihm der Dialog trotz und wegen der Shoa zur Lebensaufgabe wurde.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: This Companion explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from its inception to the present day, demonstrating the depth and breadth of the many facets of the conflict, from the historical, political, and diplomatic to the social, economic, and pedagogical aspects. The contributions also engage with notions of objectivity and bias and the difficulties this causes when studying the conflict, in order to reflect the diversity of views and often contentious discussion surrounding this conflict. The volume is organized around six parts, reflecting the core aspects of the conflict: historical and scholarly context of the competing narratives, contemporary evolution of the conflict and its key diplomatic junctures, key issues of the conflict, its local dimensions, international environment of the conflict, the "other images" of the conflict, as reflected in public opinion, popular culture, the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, and academia and pedagogy. Providing a comprehensive approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this companion is designed for academics, researchers, and students interested in the key issues and contemporary themes of the conflict.

    Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence. In thirteen contributions, the international authors shed light on the phenomenon of theology as an independent scientific discipline from different disciplinary, but also epistemological and religious points of view, which always oscillates between tradition, its own reflexivity and its relation to the world. The common characteristic feature is the border crossing along the intangible. The volume was produced in the context of the DFG-funded Research Training Group 1728 Theology as Science at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
    Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern. Wissenschaftliche Theologie in diesem Sinne ist immer Austausch, Reflexion, Begegnung und Positionierung sowie eine Form von Transzendenz. In dreizehn Beiträgen beleuchten die internationalen Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären, aber auch erkenntnistheoretischen und religiösen Standpunkten das Phänomen von Theologie als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, die stets zwischen Tradition, einer ihr eigenen Reflexivität und dem Bezug zur Welt changiert.     Abstract: Providing a comprehensive and engaging account of World War II remembrance and memory politics in East-Central and Eastern Europe this volume uses a comparative approach to examine the phenomena of cultural memory in a pan-European overview. Ranging in scope from various post-Soviet states such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, and Georgia to the East-Central and South-Eastern European post-socialist countries of Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, and Croatia, this book provides new insights into the ways in which World War II remembrance is reflected in the memory politics, historical studies, culture and literature of the respective countries. Being the first part of a two-volume anthology, state memory narratives and their public reception as well as museums, memorials and monuments as controversial objects of cultural memory provide focus for this volume’s twelve chapters, while the contributions in the sequel edition concentrate on tabooization and competing narratives as well as on location-dependent and personal-related remembrance of the Second World War in post-socialist Europe.

    Abstract: In this bold and provocative new book, Damani Partridge examines the possibilities and limits for a universalized Black politics. German youth of Turkish, Arab, and African descent use claims of Blackness to hold states and other institutions accountable for racism today. Partridge tracks how these young people take on the expressions of Black Power, acting out the scene from the 1968 Olympics, proclaiming ";I am Malcolm X,"; expressing mutual struggle with Muhammad Ali and Spike Lee, and standing with raised and clenched fists next to Angela Davis. Partridge also documents public school teachers, federal program leaders, and politicians demanding that young immigrants account for the global persistence of anti-Semitism as part of the German state's commitment to anti-genocidal education. He uses these stories to interrogate the relationships between European Enlightenment, Holocaust memory, and Black futures, showing how noncitizens work to reshape their everyday lives. In doing so, he demonstrates how Blackness is a concept that energizes, inspires, and makes possible participation beyond national belonging for immigrants, refugees, Black people, and other People of Color

    Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. The book draws on a wide range of international perspectives and insights to identify practical strategies for change in local contexts

    Abstract: Dies ist die Geschichte einer Stadt in Polen, Tarnów, in den Jahren 1918–1945, in der die Hälfte der Bevölkerung vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg jüdisch war. Die große Mehrheit der Juden in Polen lebte in Städten und ihre Geschichte eröffnet eine alternative Sichtweise auf die Geschichte Polens. Das Buch erzählt über den Alltag des multiethnischen Tarnów, überschreitet aber zeitliche Zäsuren und beschreibt, wie das soziale Gewebe zerriss, als die Deutschen 1939 einmarschierten. Diese Studie zeigt auf, wie sich das Verhältnis der nichtjüdischen Polen zu ihren jüdischen Nachbarn während des Holocaust wandelte und wie letztere um ihr Überleben kämpften. Durch das Prisma einer Stadt werden die wichtigsten Fragen polnisch-jüdischer Beziehungsgeschichte gestellt, u.a. zur Rolle der nichtjüdischen Polen während des Holocaust und zum Antisemitismus im Polen der Nachkriegszeit.

The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: Zwischen 1918 und 1921 werden in der Ukraine über 100 000 Juden von Bauern, Städtern und Soldaten ermordet, die sie für die Russische Revolution und deren Folgen verantwortlich machen. Ganz normale Bürgerinnen und Bürger berauben plötzlich ihre jüdischen Nachbarn, brennen ihre Häuser nieder, zerreißen ihre Tora-Rollen, missbrauchen sie sexuell und töten sie. Der Holocaust-Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger hat diese Welle genozidaler Gewalt rekonstruiert, bei der ganz unterschiedliche Gruppen von Menschen alle zu demselben Ergebnis kamen – dass die Ermordung von Juden eine akzeptable Antwort auf ihre Probleme sei. Als die Gewalt in die Kleinstadt Slovetschno kam, ist Rosa Zaks erst sieben Jahre alt. Doch sie wird ihr Leben lang nicht vergessen können, wie sie und ihre Geschwister mitten in der Nacht von der Mutter geweckt und auf den Dachboden des Nachbarhauses gebracht wurden. Aus ihrem Versteck müssen die Kinder mit ansehen, wie ein Pogrom gegen die jüdischen Bewohner des Ortes entfesselt wird... Anhand von lange vernachlässigtem Archivmaterial, darunter Tausende neu entdeckte Zeugenaussagen, Prozessakten und offizielle Anordnungen, zeigt der renommierte Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger, warum die Pogrome in Osteuropa eine Art Vorgeschichte des Holocaust bilden. Das überaus differenzierte Bild dieser heute weitgehend in Vergessenheit geratenen Ereignisse, das durch die Geschichten von Überlebenden, Tätern, Mitarbeitern von Hilfsorganisationen und Regierungsvertretern entsteht, verdeutlicht, warum die Juden "mitten im zivilisierten Europa" in akuter Gefahr waren, vernichtet zu werden - und ganz Europa davon wusste.

    Abstract: Although the Enlightenment had seemed to bring an end to the widely held belief that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes, charges of the so-called blood libel were surprisingly widespread in central and eastern Europe on either side of the turn to the twentieth century. Well over one hundred accusations were made against Jews in this period, and prosecutors and government officials in Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia broke with long established precedent to bring six of these cases forward in sensational public trials. In Blood Inscriptions Hillel J. Kieval examines four cases-the prosecutions that took place at Tiszaeszlár in Hungary (1882-83), Xanten in Germany (1891-92), Polná in Austrian Bohemia (1899-1900), and Konitz, then Germany, now in Poland (1900-1902)-to consider the means by which discredited beliefs came to seem once again plausible.Kieval explores how educated elites took up the accusations of Jewish ritual murder and considers the roles played by government bureaucracies, the journalistic establishment, forensic medicine, and advanced legal practices in structuring the investigations and trials. The prosecutors, judges, forensic scientists, criminologists, and academic scholars of Judaism and other expert witnesses all worked hard to establish their epistemological authority as rationalists, Kieval contends. Far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, these ritual murder trials were in all respects a product of post-Enlightenment politics and culture. Harnessed to and disciplined by the rhetoric of modernity, they were able to proceed precisely because they were framed by the idioms of scientific discourse and rationality

    Abstract: The essays in this volume consider the nature of the sect known from the Scrolls and its relation to mainline Judaism. Especially notable is a cluster of essays dealing with the Teacher and a review of the archaeology of Qumran
    Abstract: These essays reflect the lively debate about the sectarian movement of the Scrolls. They debate the degree to which the movement was separated from the rest of Judaism, and whether there was one or several watershed moments in the separation. Notable contributions include a cluster of essays on the Teacher of Righteousness and a thorough survey of the archaeology of Qumran. The texts are problematic in historical research because they rely on biblical stereotypes. Nonetheless, possible interpretations can be compared and degrees of probability debated. The debate is significant not only for the sect but for the nature of ancient Judaism

    Abstract: William of Norwich is the name of a young boy purported to have been killed by Jews in or about 1144, thus becoming the victim of the first recorded case of such a ritual murder in Western Europe and a seminal figure in the long history of antisemitism. His story is first told in Thomas of Monmouth's The Life and Miracles of William of Norwich, a work that elaborates the bizarre allegation, invented in twelfth-century England, that Jews kidnapped Christian children and murdered them in memory and mockery of the crucifixion of Christ.In Inventing William of Norwich Heather Blurton resituates Thomas's account by offering the first full analysis of it as a specifically literary work. The second half of the twelfth century was a time of great literary innovation encompassing an efflorescence of saints' lives and historiography, as well as the emergence of vernacular romance, Blurton observes. She examines The Life and Miracles within the framework of these new textual developments and alongside innovations in liturgical and devotional practices to argue that the origin of the ritual murder accusation is imbricated as much in literary culture as it is in the realities of Christian-Jewish relations or the emergence of racially based discourses of antisemitism. Resisting the urge to interpret this first narrative of the blood libel with the hindsight knowledge of later developments, she considers only the period from about 1150-1200. In so doing, Blurton redirects critical attention away from the social and economic history of the ritual murder accusation to the textual genres and tastes that shaped its forms and themes and provided its immediate context of reception. Thomas of Monmouth's narrative in particular, and the ritual murder accusation more generally, were strongly shaped by literary convention

    Abstract: The Judean community at Elephantine has long fascinated historians of the Persian period. This book, with its stellar assemblage of important scholarly voices, provides substantive new insights and approaches that will advance the study of this well-known but not entirely understood community from fifth-century BCE Egypt. Since Bezalel Porten’s pioneering Archives from Elephantine, published in 1968, the discourse on the subject of the community of Elephantine during the Persian period has changed considerably, due to new data from excavations, the discovery and publication of previously unknown texts, and original scholarly insights and avenues of inquiry. Running the gamut from archaeological to linguistic investigations and encompassing legal, literary, religious, and other aspects of life in this Judean community, this volume stands at a crossroads of research that extends from Hebrew Bible studies to the history of early Jewish communities. It also features fourteen new Aramaic ostraca from Aswan. The volume will appeal to students and scholars of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Judaism, as well as to a wider audience of Egyptologists, Semitists, and specialists in ancient Near Eastern studies. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Annalisa Azzoni, Bob Becking, Alejandro F. Botta, Lester L. Grabbe, Ingo Kottsieper, Reinhard G.     Abstract: Blick ins Buch In Europa tritt verstärkt ein „neuer antizionistischer Antisemitismus“ auf. Mit dem Verblassen der Erinnerung an die Shoah, Sekundärantisemitismus und dem Glauben an ein geeintes Europa, das nationalstaatliche Denkweisen überwindet, findet sich ein zunehmend kritisches Denken gegenüber dem Zionismus. Israel wird zum “Juden unter den Völkern”. Antisemitische Kritik am Staat Israel kommt aus verschiedenen Richtungen: von rechts (Rassismus), links (Kapitalismuskritik und Antizionismus) und vom politischen Islam (Übernahme antijüdischer Polemik aus religiösen Schriften). Diese Mischung zeigt sich in sogenannten „Cultural Codes“, in Form von teils christlich, teils muslimisch geprägten Motiven, die jedoch einen antisemitischen Hintergrund haben. „Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn“, „Rache“ oder „Wallstreet“ sind solche codierten Schlagwörter, die sich regelmäßig auch in deutschsprachigen Medien finden. Raimund Fastenbauer vergleicht erstmals die Verwendung solcher antisemitischen Motive im Internet und anderen Medien islamisch geprägter Länder mit jenen in deutschsprachigen Printmedien und weist so den starken Einfluss nach, den diese „Codes“ in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung haben.

Einige Historiker, Politiker sowie Bürgerrechtler instrumentalisieren die DDR-Aufarbeitung sogar für ihr rechtspopulistisches Engagement. Das Buch fasst wesentliche Ergebnisse der Tagung „Nach Auschwitz: Schwieriges Erbe DDR“ vom Januar 2017 zusammen. Es versteht sich als ein Plädoyer für eine intensivere Hinwendung der Zeitgeschichtsforschung wie der politischen Bildung zur Untersuchung und Kritik der SED-Diktatur als einer von drei Nachfolgegesellschaften des Nationalsozialismus.     Abstract: In Sirach and Its Contexts an international cohort of experts on the book of Sirach locate this second-century BCE Jewish wisdom text in its various contexts: literary, historical, philosophical, textual, cultural, and political. First compiled by a Jewish sage around 185 BCE, this instruction enjoyed a vibrant ongoing reception history through the middle ages up to the present, resulting in a multiform textual tradition as it has been written, rewritten, transmitted, and studied. Sirach was not composed as a book in the modern sense but rather as an ongoing stream of tradition. Heretofore studied largely in confessional settings as part of the Deuterocanonical literature, this volume brings together essays that take a broadly humanistic approach, in order to understand what an ancient wisdom text can teach us about the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing

    Abstract: Die 1700-jährige Geschichte der Juden in Deutschland, der in diesem Jahr 2021 gedacht wird, betrifft auch die Kirchen. Als Martin Luther in seiner Theologie dem Alten Testament besondere Beachtung schenkte, belastete dies sein Verhältnis zu den Juden. Denn er nahm eine christliche Vereinnahmung der Offenbarung Gottes an Israel vor. Als sich die lutherischen Theologen seit dem 19. Jahrhundert zunehmend von Luthers Judenbild distanzierten, hatte das eine theologische Entwertung des Alten Testaments zur Folge und führte zugleich zu einem Versagen, als entschiedene Solidarität mit den Juden angezeigt gewesen wäre. Auf der Suche nach einem neuen Verhältnis zum Judentum kann lutherische Theologie in ihrer gesamtbiblischen Orientierung durchaus einen Weg finden, die gemeinsame Tradition von Christen und Juden im Bekenntnis zu dem einen Gott Israels theologisch angemessener zur Geltung zu bringen. [Biblical perspectives in the encounter between Christians and Jews] Martin Luther attached particular value to the Old Testament in his theology. However, one result was the Christian absorption of God's revelation given to the people of Israel, which encumbered the Reformer's relations with Judaism. From the 19th C onwards Lutheran theologians disassociated themselves increasingly from Luther's approach to the Jews. The result was that interest in the Old Testament paled and solidarity with the Jews failed miserably at the moment it was needed most. Lutheran theology seeks a new relation to Judaism. A biblical approach encompassing the whole bible can indeed bring the common Christian and Jewish tradition in their confession to the one God of Israel to bear here.

    Abstract: "In Unveiling the Hidden-Anticipating the Future: Divinatory Practices Among Jews Between Qumran and the Modern Period, Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas and Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum collect ten studies based on primary sources ranging from Qumran to the modern period and covering Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah.     Abstract: The Lost Mirror traces cultural patterns in which the interpretation of learning and education was developed against the backdrop of Hebrew thought. The appreciation of learning is deeply rooted in the Hebrew way of thinking. Learning is understood as an open and history-conscious engagement of man with culture. The consciousness of history is shaped by the motif of the unavailability of the "other" and the difference to this "other". This "other" is traditionally remembered as "God", but may also be reflected in the motifs of the other person or the other society. The Lost Mirror reminds us of a deficit, which is that in our everyday thinking and everyday action, we usually hide, forget and partly suppress the meaning and presence of the unavailable other. The book approaches this thinking through portraits of people such as Janusz Korczak, Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Francois Lyotard and others

Die Bildungspläne zeigen dabei an, dass Judentum und Islam im Unterricht vermehrt Berücksichtigung finden sollen, auch schon zu Beginn der Sekundarstufe I und mitunter in gemeinsamen Unterrichtseinheiten zu beiden Religionen zugleich. Aber wie soll der Religionsunterricht dann konkret ausgestaltet werden? Der vorliegende Band nimmt diese Frage mit religionsdidaktischen Analysen sowie einer Untersuchung zu Bildungsplänen und Materialien für den Unterricht auf. Darüber hinaus wird eine empirische Untersuchung zu unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der Umsetzung der neuen Bildungsplanvorgaben vorgestellt. Die Befunde werden von Fachleuten aus der Aus- und Fortbildung für den Religionsunterricht aus der Perspektive der Praxis kommentiert. Der Band geht auf eine innovative Kooperation zwischen dem Lehrstuhl für Religionspädagogik an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät in Tübingen, den Staatlichen Seminaren für Didaktik und Lehrerbildung (Gymnasien) in Stuttgart und Tübingen sowie dem Pädagogisch-Theologischen Zentrum in Stuttgart-Birkach zurück.

    Abstract: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten " Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Abstract: "In Parables in Changing Contexts, new venues in the comparative study of parables are addressed by scholars of Judaism, New Testament, Buddhism and Islam. Essays cover parables in the synoptic Gospels, Rabbinic midrash, and parabolic tales and fables in the Babylonian Talmud. Three essays address parables in Islam and Buddhism. The volume shows how parables are suitably adapted in terms of form and rhetoric to enhance religious identity formation.     Abstract: Der „Ewige Jude“ stand auf dem Index der verbotenen Bücher – das lässt aufhorchen: Kämpfte die katholische Kirche so gegen antisemitische Stereotype? Dieser Frage geht der Autor anhand der Verfahren gegen die französischen Autoren Edgar Quinet und Eugène Sue nach, die das Motiv des Ewigen Juden im 19. Jahrhundert neu interpretierten. Der detaillierte Einblick in den Alltag der Zensoren ist entlarvend: In den Archiven der Inquisition und der Indexkongregation sind irreführende Gutachten zu finden, die für ihre Verfasser nur noch Mittel zu dem Zweck waren, sich in den revolutionären Kämpfen ihrer Zeit richtig zu positionieren. Mitarbeiter der zuständigen Kongregationen waren völlig überfordert, und Bücher wurden sogar ohne vorherige Lektüre verboten. Die unverzichtbare Analyse weiterer, zeitgleich ablaufender Verfahren im Kontext der kirchenpolitischen Großwetterlage zeigt schließlich: Der „Ewige Jude“ geriet nicht wegen Antisemitismus in den Blick der Zensoren, sondern weil insbesondere Sue als antijesuitisch, unmoralisch, sozialistisch und revolutionär galt

    Abstract: Continuing his contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical pietist movement of Ḥasidei Ashkenaz and its main literary work, Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières. In both areas Soloveitchik challenges mainstream views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought. Some of the essays are revised and updated versions of work previously published and some are entirely new, but in all of them Soloveitchik challenges reigning views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought.The section on Sefer Ḥasidim brings together over half a century of Soloveitchik’s writings on German Pietism, many of which originally appeared in obscure publications, and adds two new essays. The first of these is a methodological study of how to read this challenging work and an exposition of what constitutes a valid historical inference, while the second reviews the validity of the sociological and anthropological inferences presented in contemporary historiography. In discussing Ravad’s oeuvre, Soloveitchik questions the widespread notion that Ravad’s chief accomplishment was his commentary on Maimonides’ Mishneh torah; his Talmud commentary, he claims, was of far greater importance and was his true masterpiece. He also adds a new study that focuses on the acrimony between Ravad, as the low-born genius of Posquières, and R. Zerahyah ha-Levi of Lunel, who belonged to the Jewish aristocracy of Languedoc, and considers the implications of that relationship.Continuing his major contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical German Pietists and their main literary work Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières. In both areas he challenges reigning views and sets a new agenda for research.

    Abstract: In Violence in the Hebrew Bible scholars reflect on texts of violence in the Hebrew Bible, as well as their often problematic reception history. Authoritative texts and traditions can be rewritten and adapted to new circumstances and insights. Texts are subject to a process of change. The study of the ways in which these (authoritative) biblical texts are produced and/or received in various socio-historical circumstances discloses a range of theological and ideological perspectives. In reflecting on these issues, the central question is how to allow for a given text’s plurality of possible and realised meanings while also retaining the ability to form critical judgments regarding biblical exegesis. This volume highlight that violence in particular is a fruitful area to explore this tension

    Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.
