    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

Sie skizziert die marxistische Genealogie in Perecs Texten und zeigt, dass seine oulipotische Praxis nicht zu bloßen Sprachspielereien führt. Das Schreiben unter formalen Einschränkungen ist vielmehr als eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zu begreifen, unter denen auch die künstlerische Arbeit steht. Literarische Praxis und Gesellschaftskritik fallen dabei zusammen. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Unschärfe im Verhältnis von Aktionismus und Kunst sind Perecs Schreibformen wegweisend.

The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: Im Dezember 321 teilte der römische Kaiser Konstantin den Kölner Ratsherren mit, dass es fortan gesetzlich möglich sei, auch jüdische Bürger in den Rat zu berufen. Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde. In den 24 Beiträgen dieses Buches, die zum überwiegenden Teil auf einen Call for Papers für „Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte“ zurückgehen, spiegelt sich ein kleines Stück der Vielfalt des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland wider – von den frühen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Sie zeigen, dass gelebtes Judentum wesentlich mehr ist als Religion, und dass es innerhalb der jüdischen Community in Deutschland eine große Bandbreite unterschiedlichster und sich wandelnder Identitäten gibt.

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

Anhand der Geschichte strittiger Begriffe wie Assimilation, Minderheit oder Mehrheit, Ethnizität und Stamm erzählt dieses Buch eine Geschichte der Pluralität, die bis in unsere Gegenwart reicht. Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification programme. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing. For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe.     Abstract: One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

    Abstract: Durch die weite Ausbreitung und Zerstreuung des Judentums entstanden früh Orte des Lehrens und religiösen Lebens neben dem Tempel. Der Band reflektiert die Entstehung der Synagoge, die Gelehrsamkeit und jüdische Versammlung in der Diaspora von Babylonien über Alexandria bis Rom, das Lehrhaus der Weisheit am Beispiel Ben Siras und die Ausbreitung der Lehrhauskultur nach der Zerstörung des Tempels.     Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.

    Abstract: This book aims to create an integral picture of the social, economic and cultural history of the Jews in Lithuania during the course of more than six hundred years – from the Middle Ages to the 1990s. It is a translation of the study “Lietuvos žydai. Istorinė studija” (Engl. “Lithuanian Jews. Historical study”), published in Lithuanian in 2012. The Book was written by an interna-tional group of scholars from Lithuania, Israel, the United States of America and Germany.     Abstract: Postkoloniale Studien zählen aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen, was angesichts der massiven Effekte des Kolonialismus nicht verwundern kann. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha.     Abstract: "The authors publish a previously unedited Regimen of Health attributed to Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr), translated at Montpellier in 1299 in a collaboration between a Jewish philosopher and a Christian surgeon, the former translating the original Arabic into their shared Occitan vernacular, the latter translating that into Latin. They use manuscript evidence to argue that the text was produced in two stages, first a quite literal version, then a revision improved in style and in language adapted to contemporary European medicine. Such collaborative translations are well known, but the revelation of the inner workings of the translation process in this case is exceptional. A separate Hebrew translation by the philosopher (also edited here) gives independent evidence of the lost Arabic original." --

    Abstract: "In Judaism and Islam One God One Music, Merav Rosenfeld-Hadad offers the first substantial study of the history and nature of the Jewish Paraliturgical Song, which developed in the Arabo-Islamic civilization between the tenth and the twentieth centuries. Commonly portrayed as clashing cultures, Judaism and Islam appear here as complementary and enriching religio-cultural sources for the Paraliturgical Song's texts and music, poets and musicians, as well as the worshippers. Für die Neuauflage wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte überarbeitet und neueste Literatur ergänzt. Der Charakter als Studienbuch wurde noch einmal methodisch reflektiert und verstärkt.

Auch waren sie beeinflusst vom wechselhaften Verhältnis der jüdischen und christlichen Religionen, das bisweilen ein tolerantes Miteinander ermöglichte, andererseits jedoch zu Verfolgung, Hass und – wie in Deutschland im 20. Jahrhundert – zum Genozid führte. Das Handbuch versucht, entlang einzelner Begriffe wie Ritual, Aufklärung, Diaspora, Sefarad / Aschkenas oder Zionismus sowie verschiedener Forschungsgebiete wie Philosophie, Mystik, Recht oder Ökonomie, Einblicke in die Geschichte des Judentums zu geben.

    Abstract: In For Out of Babylonia Shall Come Torah and the Word of the Lord from Nehar Peqod , Barak S. Cohen reevaluates the evidence in Tannaitic and Amoraic literature of an independent “Babylonian Mishnah” which originated in the proto-talmudic period. The book focuses on an analysis of the most notable halakhic corpora that have been identified by scholars as originating in the Tannaitic period or at the outset of the amoraic. If indeed such an early corpus did exist, what are its characteristics and what, if any, connection does it have with the parallel Palestinian collections? Was this Babylonian Mishnah created in order to harmonize the Palestinian Mishnah with a corpus of rabbinic teachings already existent in Babylonia? Was this corpus one of the main contributors to the forced interpretations and resolutions found so frequently in the Bavli?

    Abstract: In The Beginning of the World in Renaissance Jewish Thought , Brian Ogren offers a deep analysis of late fifteenth century Italian Jewish thought concerning the creation of the world and the beginning of time. Ogren’s book is the very first to seriously juxtapose the thought of the great Jewish thinker Yohanan Alemanno, Alemanno’s famed Christian interlocutor, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, the important Iberian exegete active in Italy, Isaac Abravanel, and Abravanel’s renowned philosopher son Judah, known as Leone Ebreo. By bringing these thinkers together, this book presents a new understanding of early modern uses of Jewish texts and hermeneutics. Ogren successfully demonstrates that the syntheses of philosophy and Kabbalah carried out by these four intellectuals in their quests to understand the beginning itself marked a new beginning in Western thought, characterized by simultaneous continuity and rupture

So entsteht ein Bild der Geschichte des antiken Israel im Kontext der südlichen Levante, das manches Mal vertraut, oft aber auch frisch und unerwartet daher kommt.

    Abstract: Wie werden jüdische Geschichte und Kultur im neueren deutschen Geschichtsschulbuch dargestellt? Die Autoren gehen dieser Frage anhand aktuell zugelassener Werke der Sekundarstufe I aus mehreren Bundesländern nach. In ihren Bestandsaufnahmen untersuchen sie Repräsentationen jüdischer Geschichte in den Lehreinheiten zur Alten Geschichte und Antike, zum Mittelalter, zu Früher Neuzeit, Aufklärung und Vormärz, zum Kaiserreich und zur Weimarer Republik sowie die Darstellung von Verfolgung und Vernichtung zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Dies erfolgt sowohl im Hinblick auf historisch-inhaltliche Einordnungen und Interpretationen als auch unter vermittlungsproblematischem Aspekt. Die Tatsache, dass jüdische Geschichte trotz eines in der Vergangenheit mehrfach geforderten Perspektivwechsels weiterhin vorwiegend als Verfolgungs- und Opfergeschichte erzählt wird, ist ein wesentlicher Befund, der sich durch die einzelnen Beiträge zieht. How is Jewish culture and history portrayed in contemporary German history textbooks? The authors examine books from several German Länder, which are currently approved for use at lower secondary school level, in order to address this question. In their study they explore representations of Jewish history in the teaching units covering ancient history and antiquity, the Middle Ages, the early modern era, the Enlightenment and mid nineteenth century Germany (the Vormärz period), imperial Germany and the Weimar Republic as well as the depiction of persecution and extermination during the National Socialist period. The authors’ approach took into consideration both the interpretation and positioning of the historical content as well as the difficulties associated with conveying the subject matter. One of the central findings was the fact that Jewish history continues to be related predominantly as a story of persecution and victimhood, despite repeated calls for a shift in perspective.

    Abstract: Anfang Juli 1941 begann Rumänien an der Seite Deutschlands seinen Vernichtungskrieg im Osten. In den ersten Kriegstagen kam es in der Nordbukowina und in Bessarabien zu Massenmorden an der jüdischen Bevölkerung. Täter waren meist rumänische Soldaten und Gendarmen. Vielerorts beteiligten sich die Nachbarn der Juden an den Massakern oder initiierten selbst Pogrome. Simon Geissbühler schildert die Vorgeschichte der antisemitischen Radikalisierung im Rumänien der Zwischenkriegszeit und rekonstruiert minutiös die bislang kaum untersuchten blutigen Ereignisse des Sommers 1941. Er analysiert die Motive und Handlungsspielräume der Täter und fügt die wenigen Zeugnisse zusammen, die vom Leiden der Opfer berichten. Die Suche nach der Erinnerung an die jüdische Geschichte und den Holocaust in Rumänien macht der Autor zum Thema des letzten Teils des Buches. Beeindruckende Fotografien verfallender Mahnmale, Massengräber und Friedhöfe zeigen: Viel ist nicht geblieben; die jüdische Vergangenheit wurde weitgehend aus der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung verbannt. Ein eindringliches Buch, das durch den Blick aufs Detail neue Einsichten in die regionalen Variationen des Holocausts in Osteuropa eröffnet und die historische Analyse mit dem kritischen Blick auf die Gegenwart verbindet.     Abstract: Die Bedeutung jüdischer von Künstler und Kulturschaffender für die deutsche Kultur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts ist zwar unbestritten, aber in ihrer Vielfalt und Reichweite bislang nur wenigen bekannt.Dieses Buch informiert über die Welt jüdischer Kulturschaffender und berücksichtigt dabei nicht nur Leistungen der Hochkultur, sondern auch die Populär- und Alltagskultur. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei künstlerischen Werken und kulturellen Praktiken, die Veränderungen der Beziehungen zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden widerspiegeln oder durch sie hervorgerufen wurden. Darüber hinaus wird das speziell für ein Verständnis des Judentums wichtige Verhältnis von Kultur und Gedächtnis behandelt: Denn die Problematisierung der Erinnerung und des Geschichtsprozesses sind integraler Bestandteil und Triebfeder jüdischen kulturellen Schaffens und haben auf die deutsche Geisteswelt zurückgewirkt.

    Abstract: "Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht das Gerichtsverfahren gegen Wilhelm Harster vor dem Münchener Landgericht wegen Beihilfe zum Mord in 82.854 Fällen. Als Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei in Den Haag war er an maßgeblicher Stelle mitverantwortlich für die Deportation eines Großteils der niederländischen Juden. Mitangek-lagt waren Wilhelm Zoepf, der Harster ehemals direkt unterstellte Leiter des Haager "Judenreferates", sowie die dort angestellte Gertrud Slottke. Die Darstellung setzt zunächst die Biographien der Beschuldigten in den Zusammenhang von Generation und Weltanschauung und verortet dann ihre jeweiligen Verantwortung für die Deportationen in der Struktur der deutschen Verwaltung in den besetzten Niederlanden. Dabei wird die zeitgenössische Forschungsperspektive der 1960er Jahre auch mit dem aktuellen geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnishorizont abgeglichen. Resümierend stellt der Autor dieses erste Verfahren gegen einen sogenannten Schreibtischtäter in den Kontext der "Bewältigungsgeschichte" der jungen Bundesrepublik Deutschland."
