Abstract
This study explores the use of verbal irony in three case studies across the Septuagint Prophets: Amos 4:4–5, Isa 47:12–13, and Ezek 28:3–5. In the MT, all three of these passages make use of verbal irony to express criticism. The prophets’ critiques remain in the LXX versions, but do not contain verbal irony in some cases. This paper aims to discern how each translator has approached rendering the verbal irony of the Hebrew parent text by describing the observable results of the translation process on linguistic and rhetorical levels.
Zusammenfassung
Die Studie untersucht die Verwendung von verbaler Ironie in drei Einzelstudien zu den Prophetenbüchern der Septuaginta: Amos 4,4–5, Jes 47,12–13 und Ez 28,3–5. Im Masoretischen Text wird die Ironie an allen drei Stellen eingesetzt, um Kritik auszudrücken. Die prophetische Kritik bleibt in der LXX erhalten – allerdings in manchen Fällen ohne die Ironie. Um zu ermitteln, wie die Übersetzungen an die Übertragung der verbalen Ironie herangegangen sind, werden die erkennbaren Folgen des Übersetzungsprozesses auf linguistischer und rhetorischer Ebene beschrieben.
Résumé
Cet article examine l’utilisation de l’ironie verbale à travers trois études de cas dans trois textes prophétiques dans la LXX : Am 4,4–5, Es 47,12–13, et Ez 28,3–5. Dans le TM, ces trois passages font usage de l’ironie verbale pour exprimer des critiques. Ces critiques demeurent dans la LXX, mais ne contiennent pas toujours d’ironie verbale. Nous montrons comment chaque traducteur a abordé le rendu de l’ironie verbale du texte hébreu à sa disposition en décrivant les conséquences perceptibles du processus de traduction sur les plans linguistique et rhétorique.
