Abstract
Several explanations have been put forward for the use of water imagery in OT texts which speak of the abode of the dead: none has gained general assent. This article argues that the use of such imagery is metaphorical in its intent, and that the depictions of the individual swallowed up by the primeval chaos waters (cf. Gen 1,2) denote the passing of that individual from the realm of creation (life, the earth), to that of noncreation (death, Sheol).
