Scope and Content Note

The Hirschberg-Goldmann Family Collection; Breslau,* documents genealogy pertaining to the Hirschberg, Goldmann, Dienstfertig and Friedlaender families of Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland). The primary bulk of the collection, however, deals with the professional life of physician Harry Hirschberg/Harter in Germany and the United States.

Besides genealogy found in Series I, various other family members are documented in Series II. Included in this series are the citizenship, engagement, and marriage certificates for Moritz and Sara Boehm of Prussia (Folder 1). Boehm was the maiden name of Leonore Goldmann's mother, Kaethe. Folder 2 carries various ephemeral items related to the Hirschberg-Goldmann families such as business cards and newspaper advertisements. Folder 3 documents the fate of Leonore's parents, Siegfried and Kaethe including a declaration of family fortune, takeover of dwelling, and Dresdner Bank correspondence prior to and during WWII.

Citizenship, school, and professional medical career documentation concerning neuro-psychiatrist Harry Harter may be found in Series III, including World War I military service documents, publications, and obituaries. Medical documents include those issued in Germany and the United States. Series IV holds personal documents such as birth, passport and school certificates for Leonore Goldmann, while Series V documents their engagement, marriage and immigration from Germany through Cuba to the United States. Lastly, various documents concerning their son, Donald Harter may be found in Series VI.

Biographical Note

Harry M. Harter (previous name: Harry Hirschberg), a neuro-psychiatrist, was born in Breslau on July 6, 1899. His father died when he was 6 years old, his mother died in 1930. From 1917 to 1918 he served in World War I. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Breslau in 1924, he opened a successful psychological praxis in Breslau and also worked for various hospitals. He married Leonore Goldmann from Hindenburg (i.e. Zabrze) in 1928. Their son Dieter (later Donald Harter) was born in 1933, their daughter Daisy in 1938. In 1938 Harry M. Harter and his father-in-law visited the United States. His father-in-law went back to Germany, Harry M. Harter went to Cuba. His wife and his children joined him in Cuba in February 1939. They emigrated to the United States in August 1940. Leonore Goldmann's parents Siegfried and Kaethe Goldmann perished during the Holocaust. Harry M. Harter earned his medical U.S. license in 1946. He worked as a neuro-psychiatrist at various hospitals in New York State and the City of New York. He was a member of the student fraternity A.W.V (Akademisch-Wissenschaftlicher Verein) Breslau. He was also an active member of the zionist Mizrachi movement. He died on September 21, 1957.

Abstract

The collection includes family trees and genealogical information on the Hirschberg and Goldmann families from Breslau as well as some certificates of citizenship and other documents from various relatives issued in the early 19th century. The bulk of the collection consists of personal documents of the physician Harry Hirschberg (later Harter) and his wife Leonore Goldmann, such as certificates, passports, study books, military documents related to World War I, emigration papers, and new licenses and certificates issued in the United States after World War II.
