Anfang Dezember 2003 konnte die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek ihren entsprechend den Vorgaben des Kunstrückgabegesetzes (BGBl 181/1998) fertiggestellten Provenienzbericht über unrechtmäßige Erwerbungen in der NS-Zeit vorlegen.
Der Abfassung des Berichtes gingen sorgfältige und aufwändige Nachforschungen in allen fraglichen Beständen des Hauses voraus. So mussten ca. 150 000 Druckschriften und mehrere tausend Sammlungsobjekte autopsiert werden, um Hinweise auf mögliche VorbesitzerInnen zu erhalten. Nach Recherchen in den relevanten Aktenbeständen der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, des Österreichischen Staatsarchivs, der Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek, des Bundesdenkmalamtes und anderen Archiven ist es gelungen, die Vorgänge der Entziehung und Verteilung von Bibliotheksgut zu dokumentieren sowie das Schicksal zumindest einiger geschädigter VorbesitzerInnen nachzuzeichnen.
Der nun zur weiteren Entscheidung an den beim Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur eingerichteten Beirat für Provenienzforschung übergebene Bericht enthält Angaben zu 13 812 Sammlungsobjekten und 14 147 Druckschriften, die als bedenklich im Sinne des Kunstrückgabegesetzes bewertet wurden.
At the beginning of December 2003 the Austrian National Library presented a final report about illegally acquired objects during the Hitler-time according to the „Kunstrückgabegesetz 1998“ (law concerning the return of looted art; FLB 181/1998).
Before the report could be written a careful, thorough and intensive investigation among all objects which could fall into the above mentioned category had to be finished. About 150 000 prints and a few thousand other objects from the collection of the house had to be checked and information about prior owners collected. After having finished research in relevant acta in the National Library, the Austrian State Archive, the Viennese City- and State Library and other institutions, it was possible to document the practise of looting as well as to clarify the fate of at least a few of the victims.
The report submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, which will be dealt with by a special Advisory Group, contents 13 812 collected objects and 14 147 prints. All these items are according to the Kunstrückgabegesetz dubious or at least questionable acquisitions of the ANL.
Début décembre 2003 la Bibliothèque nationale autrichienne était à même de présenter son rapport concernant les provenances des acquisitions illégaux faites pendant la période nazi, ceci selon l'injonction de la loi sur la restitution d'objets d'art (BGBl 181/1998).
La confection du rapport fut précédée par des recherches scrupuleux dans tous les fonds de la maison. Par le moyen de l'autopsie quelques 150 000 imprimés et plusieurs milliers d'objets de collection ont été révisés afin de gagner des informations sur d'éventuels possesseurs antérieurs. Après des recherches dans les dépôts d'archives concernés de la Bibliothèque nationale autrichienne, des Archives d'Etats d'Autriche, de la Bibliothèque municipale et d'Etat de Vienne, de l'Office fédéral des monuments et d'autres archives, on a réussi à documenter les procédés de l'expropriation et de la répartition des biens de bibliothèques et de suivre le destin de quelques-uns des propriétaires antérieurs.
Le rapport contenant des indications sur 13 812 objets de collections et 14 147 imprimés susceptibles de tomer sous la loi sur la restitution d'objets d'art, a été transmis au Conseil pour la recherche de provenances institué près le Ministre fédéral pour la formation, les sciences et la civilisation, pour décision.
