Abstract:
Contrary to the generally accepted hypothesis of the Aramaic background of the Isa 6.9-10 quotation in Mark 4.12, I argue that its primary source was the LXX. Next, explaining the rendering of the last clause וְרָ֥פָא לֽוֹ ‘and he would be healed’ as ἀφεθῇ αὐτοῖς ‘and it would be forgiven them’, I demonstrate that it reflects a mixture of two Hebrew verbs with a weak third consonant, viz. רפא ‘to heal’ and רפה ‘to be loose’. Since רפה ‘to be loose’ is frequently translated by ἀφίημι in the LXX tradition, I suggest that the quotation is based on an otherwise non-extant revised text of LXX Isa 6.10.
