    Abstract: Gedenk- und Erinnerungsorte, die im Kontext der NS-Verbrechen stehen, verzeichnen immer neue Besucherrekorde. Sie werden mittlerweile in erheblichem Umfang von Touristen aufgesucht. Was aber bedeutet eine touristische Erinnerungskultur? Schließen sich Tourismus und Gedenken aus, oder ergeben sich dadurch neue Chancen der Geschichtsvermittlung? Die Beiträge des Bandes spüren dem Phänomen des "Dark Tourism" nach, fragen nach Motivationen und Hintergründen und werfen einen kritischen Blick auf dessen Folgen für die gegenwärtige Erinnerungskultur. Sie plädieren zugleich dafür, nicht in Abwehr und Skandalisierung zu verharren, sondern die Herausforderung durch touristische Besucher produktiv anzunehmen. „Das Forschungsfeld des sogenannten "Dark Tourism" wurde in den 1990er Jahren entdeckt und hat seit einiger Zeit auch in Deutschland Konjunktur. Ein sehr empfehlenswerter Sammelband nähert sich dem wenig erforschten Phänomen aus verschiedensten Perspektiven an. Und kommt ganz wissenschaftlich, aber gut lesbar zu dem Ergebnis: ganz so einfach ist es nicht. Es geht nicht nur um das korrekte Verhalten in Mahn- und Gedenkstätten, sondern auch darum, welche Angebote vor Ort gemacht werden. Und, dass Dark Tourism seine guten Seiten haben kann... Der Band zeigt anschaulich, wie man Reisen nach Polen etwa mit Erinnerungsarbeit sinnvoll verbinden und auch über die völlig andere Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit in Osteuropa aufgeklärt werden kann; was Touristen über ihren Aufenthalt in KZ-Gedenkstätten auf Trip-Advisor schreiben und was Besucher auf dem Obersalzberg genau suchen. Immer wieder bestürzend zu lesen ist aber auch, wie wenig sich etwa Italien mit der Periode des Faschismus auseinanderzusetzen bereit ist, gezeigt wird das an Mussolinis Grabmal - einem Pilgerort für alte und junge Unbelehrbare“ (SZ)
