Ihr Roman Bociany spielt in einem ostjüdisch-polnischen Shtetl, sie selbst ist im polnischen Łódź geboren und aufgewachsen. Die Roman-Trilogie Der Baum des Lebens beschreibt u.a. ausführlich das Ghetto-Leben unter der Nazi-Herrschaft, sie selbst lebte mehrere Jahre im Łódźer Ghetto. Ihre Gedichte zeugen von den unsagbaren Schrecken der Shoah, die sie überlebte. Das beklemmend-poetische Tagebuch aus Bergen-Belsen beschreibt die Zeit der Befreiung der Konzentrationslager, die Autorin erlebte diese Zeit schwer an Typhus erkrankt. Und in vielen Essays und Erzählungen behandelt sie das Danach. Das Überleben der Shoah, das Trauma, das Leben nach dem Krieg – weit weg von Europa. Sie selbst wanderte 1950 nach Kanada aus. Dieser Band vereint zwölf dieser Werke vollständig oder in Auszügen und zeigt somit die volle Bandbreite dieser maßgeblichen Autorin der jiddischsprachigen Literatur. Chava Rosenfarbs Werk ist ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis jüdischer Kultur und mit diesem Band zum Großteil erstmals auf Deutsch erhältlich.

    Abstract: "The book argues that the state of Israel's political and intellectual elites have failed to formulate a coherent concept of what it means for the state to be "Jewish." As a result, Israel is conceived primarily in demographic terms - as a state the majority of whose population is Jewish. The definition of who is Jewish, however, is left entirely up to Orthodox authorities. Although most observers of Israel attribute the disproportionate power of these authorities to coalition politics, Yadgar claims that the state needs to outsource the determination of Jewishness to them because the state has developed no alternative definition. Yadgar illustrates this dilemma through in-depth examination of controversies over conversion, the recently-passed Nation State law, school programs for the strengthening of "Jewish identity," and claims to an "Israeli" as opposed to "Jewish" nationality. Yadgar's elegant presentation of the intertwining of halakhic and ethnic conceptions of Jewishness, and the inability to separate "being Israeli" from "being Jewish," nicely illustrates the fallacy of clear distinctions between the realms of the religious and the secular in modern societies"--

    Abstract: Sexual desire has long played a key role in Western judgments about the value of Arab civilization. In the past, Westerners viewed the Arab world as licentious, and Western intolerance of sex led them to brand Arabs as decadent; but as Western society became more sexually open, the supposedly prudish Arabs soon became viewed as backward. Rather than focusing exclusively on how these views developed in the West, in Desiring Arabs Joseph A. Massad reveals the history of how Arabs represented their own sexual desires. To this aim, he assembles a massive and diverse compendium of Arabic writing from the nineteenth century to the present in order to chart the changes in Arab sexual attitudes and their links to Arab notions of cultural heritage and civilization.     Abstract: If Vasily Grossman's 1961 masterpiece, Life and Fate, had been published during his lifetime, it would have reached the world together with Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago and before Solzhenitsyn's Gulag. But Life and Fate was seized by the KGB. When it emerged posthumously, decades later, it was recognized as the War and Peace of the twentieth century. Always at the epicenter of events, Grossman (1905-1964) was among the first to describe the Holocaust and the Ukrainian famine. His 1944 article "The Hell of Treblinka" became evidence at Nuremberg. Grossman's powerful anti-totalitarian works liken the Nazis' crimes against humanity with those of Stalin. His compassionate prose has the everlasting quality of great art.
