    Abstract: If Vasily Grossman's 1961 masterpiece, Life and Fate, had been published during his lifetime, it would have reached the world together with Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago and before Solzhenitsyn's Gulag. But Life and Fate was seized by the KGB. When it emerged posthumously, decades later, it was recognized as the War and Peace of the twentieth century. Always at the epicenter of events, Grossman (1905-1964) was among the first to describe the Holocaust and the Ukrainian famine. His 1944 article "The Hell of Treblinka" became evidence at Nuremberg. Grossman's powerful anti-totalitarian works liken the Nazis' crimes against humanity with those of Stalin. His compassionate prose has the everlasting quality of great art. Because Grossman's major works appeared after much delay we are only now able to examine them properly. Alexandra Popoff's authoritative biography illuminates Grossman's life and legacy

The origins of Dutch Jewry trace back to diverse locations and ancestries: Marranos from Spain and Portugal and Ashkenazi refugees from Germany, Poland and Lithuania.     Abstract: Die deutsch-jüdische Grafikerin Lea Grundig (1906–1977) schreibt 1944 im palästinischen Exil: „Ein Kunstwerk, das nie ein Mensch gesehen hat, ist wie ein toter Gegenstand.“ In Nazideutschland hatte sie selbst nie die Chance gehabt, auch nur eine einzige Arbeit öffentlich zu zeigen. Die expressiven Radierzyklen aus ihrem Erleben der faschistischen Wirklichkeit entstehen faktisch in der Illegalität. Nach mehrfachen Verhaftungen gelingt ihr die rettende Flucht. Sie überlebt 1940 den Untergang der „Patria“ im Hafen von Haifa. Im Lande zeichnet sie viele Blattfolgen vom Schicksal der Juden. Ihre Arbeiten sind ein Hilferuf an die Welt, Augen und Ohren nicht zu verschließen vor dem Morden und den furchtbaren Gräueln nicht tatenlos zuzusehen. Neben der künstlerischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah wird Lea Grundig zu einer wichtigen Illustratorin hebräischer Kinderbücher in dieser Zeit. Eine Fähigkeit, die sie nach ihrer Rückkehr nach Deutschland 1949 zu wahrer Meisterschaft bei den Illustrationen der Grimmschen Märchen entwickelt. Ihre Selbstbildnisse umschließen ihr bedeutendes Werk wie eine Klammer.

    Abstract: Als »großen Bücherkundigen« und »weltgeschichtliches Refugium« hat Walter Benjamin Karl Wolfskehl beschrieben. Der Dichter registrierte die politischen Veränderungen in Deutschland früh und floh 1933 nach Italien. Seine Bibliothek, in der Volkslieder und Barock auf Brentano und Novalis, Spengler und Buber trafen, musste er im Zuge der Emigration veräußern. Der Verleger Salman Schocken erwarb die Sammlung und transferierte sie 1938 nach Jerusalem. Von dort aus kam sie 1975 in den Handel, zerstreute sich in Forschungsbibliotheken und Privatbesitz. Nur wenige Bücher begleiteten Wolfskehl 1938 aus Italien ins neuseeländische Exil: Grundstock einer neuen Sammlung. Dieses Buch zeichnet die Wege der Bücher von München über Jerusalem bis Auckland nach, fragt nach den Umständen des Verkaufs und dem Nachleben der heute zerstreuten Bibliothek. Es zeigt erstmals den extravaganten Sammler von Elfenbeinzähnen, seltenen Drucken, Büchern und Spielsachen.
