Abstract:
The UK's oldest Jewish youth club was founded in 1895 as the Jewish Lads' Brigade, to provide activities for children of the many poor immigrant Jewish families who were coming into England at that time. The first company (focused on sports and military training) was launched in London's East End, but others soon appeared throughout the city and the provinces of Great Britain. The movement later spread to South Africa and Canada. Girls were admitted to membership in 1963. In 1974, the boys' and the girls' brigades amalgamated to become the JLGB.
