Abstract: Introduction. The state of philanthropy -- Associations -- Regulations -- Property -- Taxation -- Politics -- Finance and identity -- The market -- The complex -- Conclusion. Reform.
Abstract: "Acts of charity are at the heart of most traditions of Jewish collective life. It is not surprising, then, that as Jewish immigrants established strong communities in the United States in the course of the last century, philanthropy offered them a pathway to effective communal self-help as well as political and economic power and influence. Partaking in American traditions of associational life, volunteerism, and decentralized religious organization, Jews in the U.S. established philanthropic organizations that have grown to be vital forces in Jewish public life. This book charts the history of American Jewish philanthropic practices and institutions from the late nineteenth-century to the present day. This book offers a nuanced assessment of contemporary American Jewish philanthropy. On the one hand, Berman readily acknowledges that this world of charitable giving is filled with well-intentioned people whose institutional donations have provided invaluable support for many worthwhile projects and causes. (The author herself notes early in the book her own reliance, at key moments in her professional career, on Jewish philanthropy.) On the other hand, these good intentions and good works coexist with a vast accumulation of wealth within Jewish philanthropic organizations that, for Berman, exacerbate rather than alleviate worrisome social and economic inequalities in the U.S."

Abstract: "This book analyzes Jewish society in Roman Palestine in the time of the Mishnah (70-250 CE) in a systematic way, carefully delineating the various economic groups living therein, from the destitute, to the poor, to the middling, to the rich, and to the superrich. It gleans the various socioeconomic strata from the terminology employed by contemporary literary sources via contextual, philological, and historical-critical analysis. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to analyze and interpret relevant archeological and inscriptional evidence as well as numerous legal sources. The research presented herein shows that various expressions in the sources have latent meanings that indicate socioeconomic status. "Rich," for example, does not necessarily refer to the elite, and "poor" does not necessarily refer to the destitute. Jewish society consisted of groups on a continuum from extremely poor to extremely rich, and the various middling groups played a more important role in the economy than has hitherto been thought"

Abstract: "This collection explores the different ways that intellectuals, scholars and institutions have sought to make history Jewish. While practitioners of Jewish history often assume that "the Jews" are a well-defined ethno-national unit with a distinct, continuous history, this volume questions assumptions that underlie and ultimately help construct Jewish history. Starting with a number of articles on the Jews of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Poland and Hungary, continuing with several studies of Jewish encounters with the advent of nationalism and antisemitism, and concluding with a set of essays on Jewish history and politics in twentieth-century eastern Europe, pre-state Palestine and North America, the volume discusses the different methodological, research and narrative strategies involved in transforming past events into part of the larger canon of Jewish history"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "In 1925 a team of archaeologists was sent by famed archaeologist James Henry Breasted, the Director of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, to search for the city that King Solomon built in the tenth century BCE. These excavations are rightfully famous for the light they shed on one of the most important cities in biblical times: the ancient city of Megiddo, in Israel, the site of Armageddon. The books and articles that the original participants published are still used, and debated, by archaeologists working in the region today. However, these scholarly publications provide only a small window into the daily activities of the team members and the stories behind their amazing discoveries. Using a treasure trove of other writing - including more than three decades' worth of letters, cablegrams, cards, and diaries, archaeologist and historian Eric Cline, who spent twenty years digging at Megiddo himself, brings the Chicago excavators and their discoveries to life situating them against the backdrop of the Great Depression in the United States as well as the growing troubles and tensions in British Mandate Palestine. Their story, as recounted by Cline, often reads more like melodrama than dry archaeological report and provides a unique a glimpse of the internal workings of a dig in the early years of biblical archaeology. In the course of telling their story, Cline gives readers the full picture of an archaeological site from its first discoveries to its most recent excavations placing it all in the larger scheme of the rise and fall of civilizations, from the Neolithic Revolution through the Romans"--

Abstract: "In Law's Dominion, Jay Berkovitz offers a novel approach to the history of early modern Jewry. Set in the city of Metz, on the Moselle river, this study of a vibrant prerevolutionary community draws on a wide spectrum of legal sources that tell a story about community, religion, and family that has not been told before.Focusing on the community's leadership, public institutions, and judiciary, this study challenges the assumption that Jewish life was in a steady state of decline before the French Revolution. To the contrary, the evidence reveals a robust community that integrated religious values and civic consciousness, interacted with French society, and showed remarkable signs of collaboration between Jewish law and the French judicial system"--
