Abstract:
Since Israel’s disengagement from Gaza in 2005 and Hamas’s seizure of power, there has been an ongoing military conflict between Israel and an organized entity – the Hamas regime in Gaza. The issue of evacuation during such a military confrontation has been controversial, setting residents of the localities around the Gaza Strip against the political echelon ever since the deterioration in the security situation began and the danger to the lives of area residents increased. The purpose of the study was to examine the experiences, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors of residents of the villages near Gaza who fled their homes during Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021 through semi-structured, in-depth interviews of 30 people. Among the interviewees, we can identify the intuitive system activated under stress, thanks to the natural fight-or-flight response elicited. Since they were not actively fighting, the default was evacuation. The interviewees were found to be experiencing a crisis of trust, first and foremost in the state and its institutions. The lack of trust is also evident vis-à-vis the social solidarity that once formed the cornerstone of Israeli society.
