Abstract:
Der russisch-jüdische Künstler Marc Chagall (1887–1985) schuf das Gemälde „Die Bettlerin mit dem Sack“ 1914, nachdem er aus Paris in seine Heimatstadt Witebsk zurückgekehrt war. Es zählt zu den Porträts, die er in jenem Jahr im realistisch-dokumentarischen Stil malte und befindet sich seit 2004 als Dauerleihgabe der BRD in den Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. Im Zusammenhang von Chagalls Frühwerk der russischen Jahre von 1914 bis 1922 nimmt das Bild einen wichtigen Platz ein, denn es führt hin zu den großartigen Darstellungen alter Juden, in denen der Künstler aus Kubismus und Realismus eine ganz eigene moderne Bildsprache entwickelte. Im vorliegenden Katalog interpretiert Karoline Hille, Kunsthistorikerin und Chagall-Expertin, das Chemnitzer Gemälde erstmals umfassend und verortet es im äußerst produktiven Spannungsfeld von westeuropäischer Avantgarde, russischer Kunst und jüdischem Selbstbewusstsein.
