Abstract: Some 360 synagogues were built in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia between 1800 and 1918. The Jewish Museum in Prague has now prepared an exhibition that provides the first ever detailed look at the dramatic history of these almost unknown architectural sites. Only ninety of the 360 synagogues that were built in the Czech lands in the nineteenth century still stand. The vast majority were burned down during the Night of Broken Glass in November 1938, after the Nazi occupation in March 1939, or after the deportation of the local Jewish population to the concentration and death camps in 1942. The last battles of the Second World War also took their toll. After 1945 many of the buildings were empty and dilapidated or were used for various other purposes. Work did not begin on the renovation of some of the synagogues until the 1990s. A loose continuation of the successful exhibition “Baroque Synagogues in the Czech Lands” (2011), this show features more than two dozen synagogues with special focus on their layout, internal design and ornamentation. Information is also provided about the architects and builders of these temples. By looking at the stories behind individual buildings, the exhibition also highlights the development of Jewish communities in the Emancipation period – when the Jewish population became an important part of the economic, cultural and social life of the Czech lands – and during the period of Nazi persecution which led to the destruction of most of them. Special attention is also devoted to the renovations of some of the preserved synagogues which are currently taking place in the Czech Republic.

Abstract: Im Frühjahr 2013 hat das Shpilman Institut für Fotografie (Tel Aviv) in Kooperation mit den KW Institute for Contemporary Art und der Schir Foundation (Berlin) erstmalig ein Aufenthaltsstipendium für Fotografie vergeben.

Abstract: This volume offers an overview of the career of the Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov. The work of Mikhailov is seen through the eyes of filmmaker David Teboul who completed a documentary about the artist in 2010 – Boris Mikhailov: I’ve Been Here Once Before. Mikhailov is one of the most important artists to have emerged from the former Soviet Union, and for more than 30 years has taken photographs that engage with the idea of the individual living within the historical and political system, the breakup of the Soviet Union and its many human casualties. Extensively illustrated with stills from Teboul’s film including Mikhailov with his work, the book also includes transcripts of Mikhailov’s conversations with Teboul; here he provides insight into both his own work and, more generally, the life of an artist in the Soviet Union before and after its fall. This volume brings into focus Mikhailov’s beautifully crafted and often melancholy body of work, which was relatively unknown prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Abstract: Two cousins relate their experiences with Bielskiís partisan brigade in war-torn Russia during the Second World War. Natives of Novogrodek, part of present-day Belarus, they describe Jewish life before the Holocaust and furnish a most moving account of how a thriving and prosperous Jewish center was decimated by the Nazis and local collaborators. Initial joy when their hometown was taken over by the Soviet Union disappeared when the Germans ran the Russians out of town and started implementing policies to eradicate all Jews and anything Jewish. Dov (Berl), the elder of the cousins, whose account comprises the first section of the book, lost his immediate family in the early days of German occupation and escaped from ghetto life in November 1942 to join the partisans in the dense forests of the area. He joined the Kalinin brigade and spent the rest of the war fighting the Germans and Russian sympathisers. Jack (Idel), seven years his junior, remained in the ghetto with the remnants of their once-large family. After a failed attempt in December 1942 to escape to reach the partisans - in an episode which nearly cost him his life - Jack joined an escape effort from the ghetto in September 1943, successfully reached the partisans as a member of Bielskiís partisan brigade and was reunited with his cousin. This second section features many original documents from Russian archives and elsewhere, about the partisan bandsí structure and their activities. The authors provide a unique view, not only of actual incidents, but of how two different people react to events and experiences. Updated in this second edition by a new preface and appendix, this is their story: a tale of tragedy, courage and triumph.

Abstract: Artists in the Photo League, active from 1936 to 1951, were known for capturing sharply revealing, compelling moments from everyday life. Their focus entered on New York City and its vibrant streets a newsboy at work, a brass band on a bustling corner, a crowded beach at Coney Island. Though beautiful, the images harbor strong social commentary on issues of class, child labor, and opportunity. The Radical Camera explores the fascinating blend of aesthetics and social activism at the heart of the Photo League, tracing the group's left-leaning roots and idealism to the worker-photography movement in Europe. Influenced by mentors Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, and Paul Strand, artists in the Photo League worked within a unique complex comprising a school, a darkroom, a gallery, and a salon, in which photography was discussed as both a means for social change and an art form. The influence of 'the Photo League' artists on modern photography was enormous, ushering in the New York School. Presenting 150 works of the members of 'the Photo League' alongside complementary essays that offer new interpretations of the League's work, ideas, and pedagogy, this beautifully illustrated book features artists including Margaret Bourke-White, Sid Grossman, Morris Engel, Lisette Model, Ruth Orkin, Walter Rosenblum, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, and Weegee, among many others.
