Abstract: After 1933, New York City gave shelter to many leading German and German-Jewish intellectuals. This compendium, adopting the title of a volume published by Klaus and Erika Mann in 1939, explores the impact the US, and NYC in particular, had on these authors as well as the influence they in turn exerted on US intellectual life. Moreover, it addresses the transformations that took place in the exiled intellectuals' thinking when it was translated intoEnglish and addressed to an American audience. Among the individuals presented in this volume, are such prominent names as T.W. Adorno, H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch, B. Brecht, S. Kracauer, the Mann family, S. Morgenstern, and E. Panofsky. The authors of the essays in this compendium were free to choose the angleand aspect deemed best to illuminate the given intellectual's work. Acclaimed NYC photographer Fred Stein, himself a German exile, produced numerous portraits of exiled intellectuals and artists. A selection of these compelling portraits is reproduced together in this book for the first time.

Abstract: Henri Aram lived through the rise of Nazi Germany and when his family fled Hitler's Berlin on the eve of World War II, he arrived in Australia a teenager with nothing. Through hard work, enterprise and some luck, he worked his way up from being an enemy alien to running a successful underwear business, moved into stockbroking and then became Australia's first personal finance guru and media star. With popular radio segments, newspaper columns and books for over 20 years, Aram used his media celebrity to pioneer the fight for ordinary people against corporate and government excess. During this time he was also elected to local council, where he broadened his stand against vested interests. In his later years he has continued to campaign vigorously on behalf of mum and dad investors against the greed of Australian company boardrooms. Against this background of public advocacy, Henri Aram̷s remarkable life has been marked by gratitude from presidents to pensioners, and tinged with personal tragedy from Berlin to Bellevue Hill. Along the way, he has become an icon of Sydney̷s business and social landscape and as he approaches his 90th year, continues to be one of Australia̷s most trusted financial advisers.

Abstract: Politics by Other Means traces the development and historical significance of the Free German League of Culture, the foremost organization representing anti-Nazi German refugees in Britain during the years of the Second World War. During its lifetime (1939-46), the League held a regular program of cultural events ranging from concerts and theatre performances to publications and art exhibitions, as well as a 'university in exile.' Because of the restrictions on refugees imposed by the British authorities, this cultural program served very much as a surrogate for direct political activity: the continuation of politics by other means. The study concludes by tracing the fate of those who returned to a now-divided Germany and the post-war integration of those who remained into British arts and society. The book is based largely on primary sources, using documentary material held in Frankfurt and Berlin which historians have hitherto neglected, thus most of the content and findings are new. Though based on scholarly research, the book is written in a readable and accessible style.

Abstract: Alex's Wake is a tale of two parallel journeys undertaken seven decades apart. In the spring of 1939, Alex and Helmut Goldschmidt were two of more than 900 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany aboard the St. Louis, “the saddest ship afloat” (New York Times). Turned away from Cuba, the United States, and Canada, the St. Louis returned to Europe, a stark symbol of the world's indifference to the gathering Holocaust. The Goldschmidts disembarked in France, where they spent the next three years in six different camps before being shipped to their deaths in Auschwitz. In the spring of 2011, Alex's grandson, Martin Goldsmith, followed in his relatives' footsteps on a six-week journey of remembrance and hope, an irrational quest to reverse their fate and bring himself peace. Alex's Wake movingly recounts the detailed histories of the two journeys, the witnesses Martin encounters for whom the events of the past are a vivid part of a living present, and an intimate, honest attempt to overcome a tormented family legacy.
