Abstract: Komar and Melamid, who have collaborated since the 1960's, emigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union in the late 1970's. "Symbols of the Big Bang" reflects a departure from their past projects which were Satires of Soviet socialist realism. Now, for the first time, the artists have created a series that explores their personal spirituality. These works encourage viewers to experience the mystical healing power of age-old symbols like the Star of David. Through large-scale paintings on canvas and drawings on graph paper, the artists seek to bridge the gap between the scientific Big Bang theory and stories of creation.

Abstract: Meiselman's expressionist paintings depict prayer shawls and flags that appear to have been shredded by catastrophic events. As he paints, the awful events of the past century - most notably the Holocaust - still resonate even as new terrors daily confront Jews the world over. These works, among them "Flag from Ground Zero", are not only powerfully painted, but the prayer shawl (tallit) and American flag become symbols that seem more poignantly human and expressive than any human figures. The artist gives voice to our horror and anger at man's inhumanity to man.

Abstract: In the Judaic tradition symbol systems are composed of common elements e.g. a gate, light, a crown. In this catalogue "See and sanctify" modern interpretations of Jewish symbols mingle freely with those of a bygone generation. From a Bronze Age oil lamp to a computer graphic Magen David, the medium differs but the message and significance remains the same. Special thanks to the guest curator Moshe Davidowitz, the artistic designer Amiram Shamir, the exhibit designer Jeffery Serwatien, and the endowers of the museum, Ludwig and Erica Jesselson.

Abstract: The exhibition of 160 watercolors and sketches by Norbert Troller depicts routine life inside the Terezin concentration camp where Troller was imprisoned for two and a half years. Employed by the Terezin administration to rebuild barracks and latrines for the prisoners, in his spare time Troller painted the scenes and people around him. Instead of portraying grim scenes of despondency, Troller chronicled daily acts of kindness: the courage, friendship, and love with which the inmates of Terezin fought their fears and despair.

Abstract: For 40 years, Holtz has been creating vibrant scenes of American Jewish life and beautiful land and cityscapes of Israel. His use of fine detail combined with the interplay of light and shadow create the dramatic effect typical of these paintings. Most of Holtz' paintings are small, yet they convey incredible detail. His favorite places to paint are New York's Lower East Side, Williamsburg and Boro Park as well as Me'ah Shearim in Jerusalem. Common themes found throughout Holtzs paintings are the Jewish holidays, synagogues, weddings, city and landscapes of Jerusalem and America, still life's, and portraits.

Kahn's artworks direct the viewer inward to reflect upon his or her spirituality.
