Abstract:
"A Jewish Town in Wood Sculpture. " Printed at the Plantin Press. ‘A profile of my father’ by Dorothy Satt Auerbach. With 42 leaves of plates depicting the fine wood carvings depicting shtetls made by Bernard Satt; this second edition is printed on fine paper, and contains ten more plates than the first edition. . "Many elements have joined together to give this portrait gallery of Polish and other Jews its peculiar poignance. The types depicted are passing from the page of history, often in dreadful tragedy. The artist remembers these students, farmers, tailors, and other people from boyhood with the peculiar tenderness which clings to youthful memories. " (from the foreword) The artist was born July 15, 1880, in a small Russian-Polish town called Zaloshin. At the beginning of 1908, Satt came to America and made his home in New York. Here he began to work as a wood-carver, in restorations of antiques, and in the creation of designs in antique for collectors and connoisseurs.
