Abstract:
Among the property seized during the expulsion of the Jews decided by Philip the Fair in 1306, the documents of the Treasury of the Charters mention buildings qualified as scola. This term, translated either as “school” or as “synagogue”, has provoked a lively debate about the building discovered in 1976 in the courtyard of the Palace of Justice in Rouen. The underlying question concerns the existence of specific places to transmit the knowledge and texts of Jewish tradition in the Middle Ages. To answer this question, we propose to re-examine the use of the term scola in Latin sources and of the Hebrew word yeshivah, which seems to translate scola. Finally, we will examine the organization of teaching in the Jewish world in France and Italy.
