Abstract:
In 1986, Yeshiva University Museum received a remarkable gift in honor of the University's centennial, a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to Mordecai Manuel Noah reaffirming the principle of religious freedom as enunciated in the United States Constitution. At the time we realized that few people outside the scholarly community knew anything about Noah, whom historians regard as the most influential American Jew of the early 19th century. This is why in 1987, the year of the bicentennial of the Constitution, the Museum wished to tell the story of Noah- a leader in his generation. Our catalogue gives you a wonderful history of Mordecai Manual Noah.
