    Abstract: The history of photography in the land of Israel spans a period of a hundred years, from the moment the first pioneers and colonizers arrived in Palestine towards the end of the 19th century. Besides their pioneering endeavor of resettling the ancestral land, they have also gained recognition as the pioneers of the local photography made from a Jewish Zionist point of view, and with a definite goal. In a limited selection of images, this volume aims at uncovering and reflecting the beauty of the early photographs, veiled mostly by their aura of nostalgia, and deals essentially with Jewish photography in the land of Israel from the early work of the first pioneers at the end of the 19th century and until the present, a topic which has not as yet been approached in a thorough study covering the entire period. Thus far, research on the history of photography in the land of Israel has been limited to a handful of publications and this book is only a preparation for a deeper and more thorough investigation of the subject and a detailed survey of the still uncharted territory which is photography in Eretz Israel.

    Abstract: בתנופה מחשבתית אחת, הדוקה, מקורית ומרחיקת לכת מציעה אריאלה אזולאי מתווה לתיאוריה פוליטית ותורה חדשה של צילום. התיאוריה הפוליטית מבוססת על תפיסה חדשה של אזרחות כמסגרת של שותפות וסולידריות בין נשלטים, שאינה מכוננת ריבונות ואינה מוגבלת על ידה. תורת הצילום מבוססת על ניתוח הצילום כצירוף בין שני מפגשים משלימים: האחד מתקיים בין המצלמה, הצלם והדמות המצולמת, האחר מתקיים בין התצלום לצופה. בצירופם יחד הם הופכים את הצילום לאירוע רב-ממדי. אריאלה אזולאי מתבוננת בסדרת תצלומים הלקוחה מהקשרים שונים של יחסי כוח ודיכוי: הכיבוש הישראלי, עבדוּת, הדרת נשים מן הגוף האזרחי, ואונס או ניצול מיני. אבל הצילום הוא הרבה יותר מטכניקה ודימוי, הוא מאפשר ואף מחייב תפיסה חדשה של אזרחות. מושג האזרחות מצידו מוביל את אזולאי לבדות בדיה קונסטרוקטיבית על ראשית הצילום – מעין גרסה חדשה של סיפור האמנה החברתית – ולנתח על בסיסה את החובה המוסרית המקופלת בהיגד הצילומי. הדיון תיאורטי מלווה בקריאה קרובה בתצלומים ובשחזור קפדני של מצבים קונקרטיים שונים שבהם מעורבים תצלומים, ולצידן גם זירה אחת שממנה הם נעדרים בעקביות: זירת האונס. הפרקים הפותחים של הספר חוזרים לרגע מכריע בעיצוב האזרחות המודרנית – המהפכה הצרפתית, ולרגע מכריע בהופעת הצילום – ההכרה בחוסר האפשרות להשיג מונופול על השימוש בו. הפרקים המאוחרים של הספר מוקדשים ל"שטחים" בתקופת האינתיפאדה השנייה, קוראים מחדש דימויים מוכרים ממושבת העונשין הפלסטינית ומבקשים להפוך את הצילום לכוח מחולל שינוי במבנה האזרחות הישראלי. זהו ספר שנכתב מנקודת מבט ישראלית ונשית, בהשראת דו"חות של ארגונים לזכויות האדם ואינספור דימויים מצולמים, מכאן ומשם, מן הימים הרעים האלה ומן הימים הרחוקים של ראשית הצילום. הפרספקטיבה העיונית הרחבה של אזולאי שואבת את השראתה מאולאמפ דה גוּז', חנה ארנדט, וולטר בנימין, מישל פוקו וקרול פייטמאן. זו פרספקטיבה שמאפשרת להציב ולראות על מישור אחד את המצלמה עצמה, את האסון הפלסטיני, את הגוף הנשי המופקר, ואת העמדה המוסרית אשר לה נתבעים צופים בעולם הגלובלי. כשאזולאי מתבוננת בכל אלה היא חושפת את הקשר העקרוני ביניהם כביטוי לתנאי הקיום האנושי בעת הזו

    Abstract: Arno Fischer erhielt 2010 den Kunstpreis des Landes Berlin für sein Lebenswerk. Fischer, 1927 geboren, gelang mit dem Projekt "Situation Berlin" (1953-1960) ein großer Wurf. Heute gilt die Arbeit als der bedeutendste fotografische Beitrag über die Teilung Berlins in der frühen Nachkriegszeit. Fischers Bilder, zu denen auch Mode- und Reisefotografien gehören, sind komplex strukturierte, sinnbildhafte Einzelbilder. Sein Interesse gilt dem Zustand der Gesellschaft, der Beziehungen der Menschen untereinander und der existentiellen Verfassung des Einzelnen. Die Bilder stehen in der Tradition der "Street Photography". Ihre Wirkung ist nicht zu trennen von Fischers Einfluss als Lehrer für Fotografie: im privaten Rahmen und an verschiedenen Kunsthochschulen lehrt er nun seit beinahe sechzig Jahren. Arno Fischer ist in der Welt der Fotografie seit langem eine Instanz und so berufen sich heute Fotografen aller Generationen auf ihn.

    Abstract: The early practitioners of photography in the late 19th century and first decades of the 20th century shaped the evolving language of the medium by expanding the limits of the photographic vision. Many of these pioneers were immigrants - people displaced by choice or, quite often, by necessity. These photographers became observers and interpreters of their new surroundings through the filters of their different cultures, languages and religions. Photography in the 20th century (particularly the Modernist vision) is deeply indebted to them. Displaced Visions reconsiders the work and influence of key figures in modernist photography from the point of view of their status as immigrants, considering how this condition affected their vision and creativity and enhanced the development of the photographic language in general. It features the work of nearly 100 photographers, including André Kertész, Brassai, Bill Brandt, Man Ray, Robert Frank, the New York School photographers, the Photo League Photographers, Lisette Model, Moholy-Nagy, Erich Salomon, Weegee, William Klein, Tina Modotti, Inge Morath and many more. It accompanies a major touring exhibition opening at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem in spring 2013.
