Abstract:
Discusses the lengthy debate in Germany concerning the project to erect a monument in memory of the Holocaust victims. Reflects on the difficulty for descendants of the perpetrators to put up such a monument. Surveys various themes discussed in the German press; one of the most important was whether the monument should commemorate only Jewish victims of the Nazis or others victims too, including Germans. However, most of the discussants agreed that it should be a memorial to the Jewish victims. In 1994 the first proposals were presented. The second phase of discussion concerned the shape of the memorial. At the same time, many intellectuals wrote letters to the press opposing the very idea of a memorial. In 2000, construction of the chosen memorial began, in an atmosphere of controversy about its final form. Concludes that the monument and the story of its construction say less about the events to be memorialized and more about the mentality of the people who are erecting it - about their vision of history and their needs.
