Abstract: Studies Arabic literary production from the point of view of commitment and hybridization and the interactions between themDiscusses the role of the 1948 Nakba in shaping Palestinian culture and literaturePresents the contribution of Maḥmūd Darwīsh in the process of Palestinian nation-buildingSheds light on the emergence of Palestinian theatrical movementProvocatively rereads the history of Jewish involvement in Arabic literatureLaments the demise of Arab-Jewish culture following the clash between Zionism and Arab national movementPart of a two-volume set, this volume examines the issues of commitment and hybridization in Arabic literature concentrating on Palestinian literature and Arab-Jewish culture and the interactions between them. Reuvin Snir studies the contribution of Palestinian literature and theatre to Palestinian nation-building, especially since the 1948 Nakba. Becoming an essential part of the vocabulary of Arab intellectuals and writers, since the 1950s commitment (iltizām) has been employed to indicate the necessity for a writer to convey a message rather than merely create an imaginative work for its own sake. As for hybridization, the author focuses on the role Jews have played in Arabic literature against the backdrop of their contribution to this literature since the pre-Islamic period, and in light of the gradual demise of Arab-Jewish culture in recent years. The blending of elements from different cultures is one of the major phenomena in Arabic literature, certainly in light of its relationship with Islam and its cultural heritage, which has been extending during the last one-and-half millennia

Abstract: Introduction. The state of philanthropy -- Associations -- Regulations -- Property -- Taxation -- Politics -- Finance and identity -- The market -- The complex -- Conclusion. Reform.
Abstract: "Acts of charity are at the heart of most traditions of Jewish collective life. It is not surprising, then, that as Jewish immigrants established strong communities in the United States in the course of the last century, philanthropy offered them a pathway to effective communal self-help as well as political and economic power and influence. Partaking in American traditions of associational life, volunteerism, and decentralized religious organization, Jews in the U.S. established philanthropic organizations that have grown to be vital forces in Jewish public life. This book charts the history of American Jewish philanthropic practices and institutions from the late nineteenth-century to the present day. This book offers a nuanced assessment of contemporary American Jewish philanthropy. On the one hand, Berman readily acknowledges that this world of charitable giving is filled with well-intentioned people whose institutional donations have provided invaluable support for many worthwhile projects and causes. (The author herself notes early in the book her own reliance, at key moments in her professional career, on Jewish philanthropy.) On the other hand, these good intentions and good works coexist with a vast accumulation of wealth within Jewish philanthropic organizations that, for Berman, exacerbate rather than alleviate worrisome social and economic inequalities in the U.S."

Abstract: "The end of the Cold War ushered in a new period in Israeli foreign policy, situating it in an unprecedented strong strategic position. The collapse of the Soviet Union, which had supported Israel's Arab foes, ended the bipolar world order and established the United States (US), Israel's closest ally, as the world's sole superpower. Shortly, thereafter, in the 1990-1991 Gulf War, a US-led coalition expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait, exposed deep divisions within the Arab world, and weakened the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), which supported the Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, during the conflict. These dramatic international shifts were coupled with changes within Israel. The successful restructuring of the Israeli economy via the 1985 Economic Emergency Stability Plan (EESP), and arrival of close to a million immigrants from the former USSR, greatly increased Israel's state capacity to seize the opportunities and tackle the challenges generated by the end of the Cold War"--

Abstract: "A history of Jews in Morocco from the 1930s through the 1970s, this book traces how Jewish communists went from being outsiders (even pariahs) vis-à-vis the Makhzan to being embraced as the "Sultan's communists." Her narrative offers welcome nuance to our understanding of how Jews in Morocco were and are viewed--by their non-Jewish neighbors, by the Moroccan government, by American Jewish organizations, and even by tourists and scholars"--

Abstract: "The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain examines the grammatical, exegetical, philosophical and mystical interpretations of the Bible that took place in Spain during the medieval period. The Bible was the foundation of Jewish culture in medieval Spain. Following the scientific analysis of Hebrew grammar which emerged in al-Andalus in the ninth and tenth centuries, biblical exegesis broke free of homiletic interpretation and explored the text on grammatical and contextual terms. While some of the earliest commentary was in Arabic, scholars began using Hebrew more regularly during this period. The first complete biblical commentaries in Hebrew were written by Abraham Ibn 'Ezra, and this set the standard for the generations that followed. This book analyses the approach and unique contributions of these commentaries, moving on to those of later Christian Spain, including the Qimhi family, Nahmanides and his followers and the esoteric-mystical tradition. Major topics in the commentaries are compared and contrasted. Thus, a unified picture of the whole fabric of Hebrew commentary in medieval Spain emerges. In addition, the book describes the many Spanish Jewish biblical manuscripts that have remained and details the history of printed editions and Spanish translations (for Jews and Christians) by medieval Spanish Jews. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval Spain, as well as those interested in the history of religion and cultural history"--

Abstract: Allowing a new perspective on the sociology of Israel and the realm of black studies, this volume reveals a highly nuanced portrait of the phenomenon of blackness, one that is located at the nexus of global, regional, national and local dimensions. While race has been discussed as it pertains to Judaism at large, and Israeli society in particular, blackness as a conceptual tool divorced from phenotype, skin tone and even music has yet to be explored. Grounded in ethnographic research, the study demonstrates that many ethno-racial groups that constitute Israeli society intimately engage with blackness as it is repeatedly and explicitly addressed by a wide array of social actors. Enhancing our understanding of the politics of identity, rights, and victimhood embedded within the rhetoric of blackness in contemporary Israel, this book will be of interest to scholars of blackness, globalization, immigration, and diaspora"--
