Abstract: The film unites three powerful elements. Central are classic black and white portraits of survivors, created by photographer/filmmaker Evvy Eisen. Survivors' stories are told in sections: Destruction and Loss, Lives Rebuilt and Reflections. Their emotion filled voices recount memories of the separation from family, the horror of the cattle car journey, the selection where it was decided if they were fit to work or condemned to die. A haunting solo piano score composed and performed by Nicole Milner, a survivor, unites the visual and spoken threads. This blending of original narrative, photographs, and music portray memorable images of human courage, stamina and creativity born of the most desperate circumstances. The film's historical as well topical implications make it relevant in a wide variety of community settings and schools where it has an especially strong resonance with student viewers.

Abstract: Alfred Amkraut was born on September 21, 1926 in Saarbruecken (Saarbru?cken), Germany. Alfred was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home near the town̷s synagogue. Alfred attended elementary school in Saarbruecken before moving to Frankfurt at the age of nine to live with his aunt and uncle and to continue his education at the main Jewish school. A few weeks prior to Kristallnacht, Alfred and his relatives, along with other Polish nationals living in Germany, were transported to the German-Polish border by the SS. They eventually returned to Germany, whereupon Alfred̷s uncles and father were taken to Buchenwald. After the events of Kristallnacht, Alfred̷s family applied for visas to Central and South America, and the family left for South America in July 1939. Though there was a tight-knit Jewish community in La Paz, Alfred still felt ostracized while living in Bolivia and never experienced a sense of freedom until he came to the United States.
