Abstract:
States that an increasing number of Holocaust diaries have been published lately in various countries, which indicates that there is a demand for them; however, the diaries are often censored to protect the societies of these countries. Discusses whether these diaries should be considered canonical or popular works. Notes that a Holocaust diary is not just a testimony of what happened, but part of the trauma of the person who wrote it, and therefore may have religious-like authority. At the same time, it is a popular work, because of its subjectivity. Discusses the diaries of Anne Frank, Etty Hillesum, and Victor Klemperer, noting that all three were censored before publication.
