Abstract:
Discusses antisemitism in Argentina from 1889 until the present, giving examples from literature, education and politics. From the beginning of Jewish immigration (which was an important part of the European mass emigration) the ruling land oligarchy had a hostile attitude toward the Jews. They considered them as a paradigm of both the foreigner and the revolutionary, a danger to Argentinian national identity and institutions. This stereotype spread to other sectors of the population, and, fueled by political and economic crisis, led to discrimination and violence.
