Abstract:
Discusses the views of Iraqi Jewish writers in Israel who wrote works in Hebrew on the Farhud pogrom in Baghdad in 1941. Shalom Katav saw the pogrom as part of the oppression of Jews throughout Muslim history. Three assimilationist writers - Anwar Sha'ul, Salman Darwish, and Azat Sasson Mu'alem - considered the pogrom a Muslim betrayal of Jews who were loyal Iraqis. Novelists David Rabbie and Sami Michael described the horrors of the pogrom and also mentioned Jewish attempts at self-defense. Contends that such writers provide a more full and authentic picture of the pogrom than do researchers.
