Abstract:
Contends that the New Testament contains pro-Jewish as well as anti-Jewish passages. In Paul's epistles there can be no anti-Judaism because before 70 CE the Jewish religious establishment did not exclude Judeo-Christian congregations. After the destruction of the Temple, however, the community became restricted to those who accepted the Law. The Christians were thus deprived of the special protection and privileges which the Jews continued to enjoy. They were persecuted by Jews and Romans alike, and the Jews often denounced them to the Romans. Concludes that anti-Jewish passages in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels, are due to these historical circumstances rather than to theological polemics.
