Abstract:
Summarizes research carried out in 1994 on Switzerland's policy towards refugees in World War II according to which at least 24,000 refugees (most of them Jews) who asked for asylum were turned back at the border. The Swiss authorities tried to justify these cases in the context of fear of "foreign" influences. States that the authorities were fully conscious of the fate awaiting those who were driven back. Claims that although the question of the Swiss refugee policy is officially considered to be "settled", this chapter cannot be expunged from Swiss history.
