Abstract:
Comments that the expression "war crimes" is not the proper term for crimes committed far behind the frontlines and without relevance to military requirements. Punishment of "war criminals" can never even remotely be commensurate with the murder of hundreds and thousands of human beings (by each individual criminal), but war crimes trials have a historical and educational value. Notes that most of the key Nazi personnel in Poland were of Austrian origin, but Austria failed to prosecute most of them and eventually restored them to positions in government, including the police. Of those who were tried, only a few were convicted. The Ministry of Justice in Austria took no interest in the West German trials involving Austrian war criminals. Recounts his frustrating attempts to bring war criminals to justice in Austria.
