Abstract:
Discusses Nazi proposals to solve the "Jewish problem" by settling the Jews in a reservation in Madagascar or Guyana, and later in Poland. In September 1939, Heydrich adopted a plan approved by Hitler to settle Jews from the Reich, Bohemia, and Moravia near Lublin. Many Viennese Jews volunteered, hoping to survive the war there, and were sent to Nisko on the San River, together with Jews from Moravia and Kattowitz. Deportations stopped temporarily in November 1939, and ended with the destruction of a bridge over the San River. They were not resumed because of changes in plans and opposition from Hans Frank, head of the new General Government of Poland.
