Abstract:
A comparison of "open depot" displays of Jewish art and ritual objects in two Jewish museums - the Jewish Museum Vienna and the Spertus Museum in Chicago, with criticism in regard to the objects shown and the manner of their exhibition. The authors maintain that there is a sense of viewing ghostly objects of Jews and Judaism in the past, rather than objects of a vibrant Jewish communal and religious lifestyle which is ongoing. Lacking, also, are works by present-day Jewish artists.
