Abstract:
In 2000 the Dutch government and financial institutions agreed to pay Holocaust survivors or their descendants moral and material compensation for their losses. This task impelled the authorities to estimate the Jewish population of the Netherlands at the end of the war (1945). For the projections, inter alia, results of the Nazi census of "racial Jews" in the Netherlands in 1941 were used. Presents statistics on the deportation of Jews from the Netherlands (102,992 people), as well as other sources of losses (murders on the spot, suicides, flight from the country, etc.). Ca. 3,000 Dutch Jews escaped deportation due to the efforts of H.G. Calmeyer, a German lawyer who, at personal risk, succeeded in categorizing them as half-Jews or even Aryans.
